The book attempts to make available the recent developments in polyoxometalate (POM) synthesis. Heterogeneously catalyzed selective oxidations of alcohols is a highly topical field. Polyoxometalates (POMs) represent a large class of nanosized metal-oxo anions. POMs are remarkable not only in terms of molecular and electronic structural versatility, but also due to their reactivity and relevance in fields such as photochemistry, analytical chemistry, clinical chemistry, magnetism, catalysis, biology, medicine and materials science. Lanthanide-containing POMs have been investigated less than those containing 3d-transition metals. The former have shown interesting properties in the areas of photoluminescence, catalysis, electrochemistry, and magnetism. Chapter I contains an extensive introduction to the class of POMs. Chapter II describes the synthetic procedures for some POM precursors and presents the different experimental techniques used for the characterization of the products. Chapter III comprises the lanthanide-containing polyoxotungstates results, divided into two sections, the lanthanide isopolytungstates and the lanthanide heteropolytungstates. All obtained compounds have been characterized in the solid state by FTIR, single-crystal XRD, TGA and elemental analyses. Furthermore, solution studies of the diamagnetic derivatives (La, Lu and Y analogues) by 183W and 89Y NMR spectroscopy were also performed, in addition to 13C NMR and 1H NMR spectroscopy for the acetate containing POMs.

The book highlights recent prominent results in the domain of the synthesis of new polyoxometalates with a specific attention to polyoxothioanions, and provides some novelties and perspectives in selected domains such as magnetism, luminescence and nanochemistry, and macroions self-assembly in solutions. The case of “one-pot” syntheses often used and reported in POMs synthesis is studied in terms of more complex solution speciation processes related to highly dynamical situation connected to factors such as pH, ionic strength, reaction time, temperature, counterion nature, concentration of starting materials, presence of electron donors and redox potentials. The behavior of macroions (2nm-6nm size range) in solution is shown to be quite different from the simple ionic solution or colloidal systems (Debye-Huckel model). Their self-assembling into a single-layered, spherical, hollow vesicle structure, namely the “blackberry” structure, is clearly described. Examples of spin clusters with tunable interactions are given and single molecule magnets based on POMs are specifically tackled. Besides paramagnetic transition metal centres and lanthanoid ions encapsulated in archetypal lacunary polyoxoanions, magnetically functionalized Kleperates are described, their discovery tracing back nearly 15 years.

Optical spectroscopy has been instrumental in the discovery of many lanthanide elements. In return, these elements have always played a prominent role in lighting devices and light conversion technologies (Auer mantles, incandescent lamps, lasers, cathode-ray and plasma displays). They are also presently used in highly sensitive luminescent bio-analyses and cell imaging. This volume of the Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths is entirely devoted to the photophysical properties of these elements.
