Is polygamy moral? Should the Church marry and bless polygamists? Should Europe and America legalise polygamy? What really is the African's honest opinion of polygamy? David Maillu is a leading African literary writer, and here provocatively discusses these issues. He looks at the relevance of polygamy in the modern society, from historical, ethical, traditional, economic, biblical and psychological standpoints.

It was in Bo that a situation started developing between Muslims and Evangelical Christians when an American preacher was to hold a religious rally at the local football stadium. Tension was so whipped up that cooler heads with the security people had to prevail. It was then it dawned on me that these people were misguided to stand at each other’s throat for religions that were brought to them, hence The Dilemma of the Blackman.

Polygyny, commonly called polygamy, has been one of the main obstacles to evangelisation in Africa. After Vatican II many theologians began to question the traditional church policy towards polygamists and their wives who, after receiving the faith, asked for baptism. The two main solutions proposed were the baptism and the life catechumenate solutions. The present work studies polygyny in pre-christian Bafut and traces the history of the problem of polygynous converts from 1201. It suggests that the real obstacle to their baptism is polysex, not poly-marriage. In the concluding chapter, a solution is offered to polysex, according to which the polygamist, after baptism, becomes a special kind of monogamist.

In We Want for Our Sisters What We Want for Ourselves, Dr. Patricia Dixon debunks myths about monogamy and polygyny and challenges us to rethink our approach to marriage and family. This book reveals that before European domination, polygyny was an accepted marriage and family practice in over eighty percent of the world's cultures. Even in Western societies, polygyny has always been practiced. However, because it is done so under a myth of monogamy, this creates a "peculiar" form of the practice that is demoralizing to women. This peculiar form of polygyny was practiced in early European history in Greece and Rome. It was also practiced during slavery in the U.S. to the detriment of African American women and their families. Even in contemporary America, because closed polygyny is practiced in various forms, under the guise of monogamy, it continues to disempower African American women and undermine their marriages and families. Dr. Dixon offers many reasons to support polygyny, most importantly, the shortage of available African American men. Through extensive interviews, she offers an insider's look at polygynous marriages, showing readers its benefits and disadvantages, inter-personal dynamics, how financial, sexual, and parental responsibilities are determined, and the legal, moral, and cultural challenges that must be overcome in order to make polygynous marriage possible within American society. Finally, she calls for African American women to move toward building marriages and families based on love, truth, community, and ultimately a womanist ethic of care for sisters. Book jacket.

Women, and especially in Africa have been demeaned and oppressed for along time. In my book, I have proposed that the Church needs to work in solidarity with the suffering so as to realize the reign of the mystery of Christ amongst us.By developing the image of 'the people of God' the Church will enhance the empowerment of women on their rights, raising awareness on the effects of polygyny, involving women in decision making. Mercy Amba Oduyoye (1995), states "A Church that consistently ignores the implications of the gospel for the lives of women and other underclass cannot continue to an authentic voice for salvation" (182). The ecclessiology of the people of God is a better model of the Church because of its emphasis on equality, and full participation of all members, clergy and laity. The deprivation of women's rights cannot be allowed in the 21st century, it is the role of the Church more especially in Africa, to liberate women from their systematic oppressions.
