Killer Verse: Poems of Murder and Mayhem is a spine-tingling collection of terrifically creepy poems about the deadly art of murder. The villains and victims who populate these pages range from Cain and Abel and Bluebeard and his wives to Lizzie Borden, Jack the Ripper, and Mafia hit men. The literary forms they inhabit are just as varied, from the colorful melodramas of old Scottish ballads to the hard-boiled poetry of twentieth-century noir, from lighthearted comic riffs to profound poetic musings on murder. Robert Browning, Thomas Hardy, W. H. Auden, Stevie Smith, Mark Doty, Frank Bidart, Toi Derricotte, Lynn Emanuel, and Cornelius Eady are only a few of the many poets, old and new, whose work is captured in this heart-stopping—and criminally entertaining—collection.

Enjoy an inside glimpse of the personal and professional lives of Lieutenant Nancy Gremillion and her inept, grumbling partner, Detective Bill Lyntrotski, as they endeavor to rid the quiet suburban streets of northern Virginia of a sadistic killer. With the aid of handsome Native American FBI agent Paul Proudwolf and obnoxious ace newspaper reporter Leo Clancy, they follow numerous twisting trails in their attempt to stop a well-trained killing machine on the rampage.

THE POETRY YOUR TEACHER WOULDN'T LET YOU READ Somtow flogs a dead horse to life in this astonishing collection of sonnets. Horror and humor, pathos and putridity, the sublime, the subliminal, and the sublimated all blend together in this tour-de-force of madcap invention. Exposing the human condition in all its grittiness and unwitting comedy, this book is the first collection of S.P. Somtow's poetry since the pretentious outpourings of his adolescent years. "There's life in this art form," he says, "plenty of life, as long as you're willing to dive headlong into the maelstorm of our insane twenty-first century existence." His subject matter comes from the tabloids: serial killers, sex scandals, mass murderers, and hate crimes. Distilled into the severe discipline of the sonnet form, these tawdry subjects find a new resonance, and new relevance, and we recognize in ourselves a continuity with our own past.... "Be scared, my friends. Be very, very scared. This book will take you from the paths you've known, To sights unseen, dark corners never bared, To deeds undared, halls never braved alone. Forget the world of Spenser's airy Faerie Shakespeare's bisexual angst, or Petrarch's passion; This poet's cream's decidedly non-dairy, His skewed perspective somewhat not the fashion. To this poetic banquet do I bring Inquiring minds that have inquired too much: Of Court TV and Tabloids do I sing, Of killers, perverts, hypocrites, and such, For in life's drama, they too play their part. Inhuman horror hides a human heart."

Advertising constructs us, always addressing, "You." But who is this person, this "you" that advertising addresses? Poets and Killers answers this question by telling the life story of a man through advertising. Beginning in the 1940s when he is born, working up to 2009 when he dies, Poets and Killers uses lines taken directly from advertisements to write the main character's biography. This book examines what it means to be an individual in a world where we are all sold the same individuality, exploring what possibilities for a non-utilitarian humanity still exist between the lines of advertising copy. By using the language of advertising to create something fundamentally unmarketable and useless, that is, the story of a fallible human life expressed through experimental poetry, Poets and Killers shows that despite the pervasiveness of advertising and its efforts to rob us of the ability to express ourselves without commodifying ourselves, we can still speak.

From his very first poem in 1990, D. Alexander Holiday has engaged in an intense form of poetry that might be called Reality Writing. He has dealt with issues both personal (the abandonment and loss of never knowing his own parents), and universal (racism, genocide, imperialism). Now he returns with more poignant poems in which he continues a tradition he began long ago: putting people on trial in the public arena. In this case, the defendants include those who have united against him to prevent him from gaining custody of the granddaughter he was never informed he had until the death of his own daughter, the little girl's mother. Together with assorted letters and documents, this body of work tells the often horrifying story of Mr. Holiday's run-ins with the human race: with the abusive and sadistic foster parents with whom he spent his first 18 years of life, having been abandoned by his mother and father ("Somehow Mama Knew"); with his daughter's mother ("Ashes to Ashes," "All the Killers Gathered"); and with co-workers ("Please Tell Massuh," "How I Am Perceived"). But they also offer a few moments of gentle respite in the form of salutes to comedians whose work got him through the worst of times ("Stop Laughing at Me" and "Final Curtain"). As you read these poems, you will gradually learn of the insidious pattern of betrayal and deceit to which Mr. Holiday has been subjected to since his daughter's mother packed up their child and moved her back down to New York City when she was still an infant. You will learn why he had no contact with his daughter, whom he loved deeply, for over 10 years until he learned of her death in a most bizarre manner. And as you read of his conflicts with the human race - the years spent in abusive foster homes, repeated betrayals at the hands of family members, acquaintances, and others - you will marvel at the amazing story of a man who faced utter abandonment and turned to reading and writing instead of drugs, alcohol, or even more destructive forms of catharsis and escape which he might have (understandably) chosen.

'The governor called me into his office one fine day and in his best serious voice with his best serious look told me I could no longer write letters to my publishers because it appeared to him that I was trying to write another book. The man should have been a rocket scientist ...' Including stories about drinking with Bob Hawke, Chopper's reflections on the closing of the infamous H-Division section of Pentridge Jail, his unique take on race relations, sex and relationships, For the Term of His Unnatural Life gives more fascinating insight into the mind and life of one of Australia's most notorious criminals, and what daily life behind bars in maximum security prison is actually like. Bleakly funny, brutal and disturbingly true, Chopper's memoirs have become international bestsellers and made him one of Australia's most famous – or infamous – names.
