Knowingly or unknowingly we are all moving into Light. For most the journey is long and fraught with difficulties and karma to be overcome. A new world, the Supramental as named by Sri Aurobindo, is now fully established in the earth and growing in strength and plenitude and one day even the most blind will be able to 'see' the manifestation in all its beauty, power and delight. This world, where the Life Divine on earth is no longer a dream but a fact, will see the conquest of death by Divine Love. And so it is incumbent on each of us to find within us our psychic being, the true soul in us, offer ourselves totally for the divine purpose, and the acceleration of the Divine's work. What now we see, the brutality and ignorance of man in his unevolved state, the reign of evil, lust, greed for money and power over his kind, is indicative of the final throes of the dark forces, aware that their end is near and doing all they can to maintain their hold on humanity. They will not succeed for the hour of God is upon us. We are called to exceed ourselves, to embody the future humanity through an inner change from darkness to light, from division to unity, to a vision of oneness on this beloved planet, returned to its former beauty and more, the manifest home of the Divine. The Mother spoke of youth as being a state of being rather than a condition of the body. Narad himself fulfills this primary condition of being young for his spirit is ever keen and ready to explore the Unknown and glimpse the Unseen. With love in his heart and courage and faith as wings his soul soars always forward and further towards the Beyond. A lesser mortal would thus fly into the eternal Blue beyond all landscapes but his heart of love has chosen otherwise. He prefers to graduate his flight, to move in ever widening circles of God's embrace, to return again and again and sing of that vision which he has glimpsed during his flight. What he brings back is not just poetry but strains of a new music that await their discovery by beings of the New World. Narad is surely one of them who brings to us glad tidings from afar in this world that is packed with the throes and anguish of a New Birth. Surely his soul is soaked deeply in the Love of the Divine Mother whose vision he lives and breathes. This anthology is indeed yet another gift of love that links the earthly aspiration for Beauty with the vision of the All-Beautiful. To read them is a delight since they carry some touch of that Grace which has moved his soul. To reflect upon them is to bathe in deep waters of love that ever refresh and rejuvenate us. -Dr. Alok Pandey

Since 1980, Shraddhavan has been teaching English in Auroville through close readings of Sri Aurobindo’s revelatory epic Savitri: a legend and a symbol. In August 1998 these classes were resumed at Savitri Bhavan, with a growing number of students, including young Tamil teacher-trainees from the Arul Vazhi School located in Promesse, Auroville. These classes were given the name ‘The English of Savitri’ and they concluded in May of 2009 as this group reached the end of the poem. This book is based on the transcripts of a new series of classes given by Shraddhavan between August 2009 and October 2010, which have been edited for conciseness and clarity, while aiming to preserve some of the informal atmosphere of the course. Edited transcripts of these classes began to be published serially in the Bhavan’s journal of Study Notes on Savitri, ‘Invocation’, from issue 32 onwards, since it was felt that they may be of interest to a wider audiance. They are now being published in book form in several volumes by Yukta Prakashan publishers of Vadodara. This suggested the idea of collecting the original English articles into a book form as well. This is the first such volume, covering all the five cantos of Book One of the poem, ‘The Book of Beginnings’.

"The poet who sang of human love and human pain, is transformed by her touch into Narad, the heavenly bard who sings not only of the heavenly ecstasies but of earthly rapture experienced by the touch divine. He sings of the many moods of the infinite Grace and Love and the joy of the New Creation that awaits our discovery. He is indeed among the chosen ones whom God has chosen to love and who is born to serve Her. The poems of devotion and love for the Divine Mother that we find here are not merely the expressions of a personal love but a devotion and love that is vast enough to embrace all things in the Divine Beloved and discover his object of adoration in all beings and persons. It is this wide and intense movement of love and adoration for the Divine Mother that makes this anthology so very special. The other special distinction of these poems comes from the fact that what Narad reveals here is not just inner experiences with which the mystic has to often contend with, but the incomparable joy of experiencing the touch of the embodied Divine. To read these poems is to enter into meditation. It is to be uplifted beyond the sphere of sorrow into the domain where all is Light and Love, It is to open yet another door to a communion with the Divine Mother. We thank Narad for giving us such a wonderful and priceless treasure." -Dr. Alok Pandey

In this epic spiritual poem, Sri Aurobindo reveals his vision of mankind's destiny within the universal evolution. He sets forth the optimistic view that life on earth has a purpose, and he places our travail within the context of this purpose: to participate in the evolution of consciousness that represents the secret thread behind life on Earth.

To the discerning reader, these poems are self-explanatory and evoke deep resonances. Yet, for a fuller appreciation of this collection we must make the effort to see and to read through the penetrating vision of a mystic. Sri Aurobindo teaches, prepares and leads us to just such an approach in his book The Future Poetry. The future poetry, he explains, consists in "an utterance of the deepest soul of man and of the universal spirit in things ... in the very inmost language of the self-experience of the soul and the sight of the spiritual mind." As a life-long disciple of Sri Aurobindo, Narad's poetry is best appreciated and valued by this highest standard of reference. In this volume we find Narad's diverse experiences as musician, singer, conductor, photographer, gardener and a lover of Nature, weave effortlessly into single inspired tapestry of revealing experiences turning always to "a greater self-vision of man and Nature." These poems articulate our struggles better than we could ever have expressed on our own, thus clarifying our experiences and always gently nudging us onward to a higher freedom. In their power to liberate and transform is the fulfilment of the true sense and purpose of the future poetry. This treasury of Narad's Visions, Dreams and Experiences will surely stand among the worthy examples of the future poetry from the direct disciples of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. We understand better why the Mother named him Narad- the poet-singer of the Gods embodying love and devotion for the Divine. Sraddhalu Ranade
