Ten year old Justine has lived with the loss of her mother for two years. Even while she misses her Mom, she is discovering the gifts they share. When bullying at school makes Justine's life miserable she befriends a tree she calls Drasil. It isn't fair that life causes so much pain for Justine, so her father is happy when she makes a new friend, even when that friend is a tree. She tells stories of visiting a land where peace is valued above everything else and hospitality is the primary virtue. Her father listens to her stories and marvels at how she changes, even as he wonders if her stories are true or the fantasy of a lonely young girl. When the stories get darker and more dangerous he worries that she is being hurt even in this land of peace. He has no idea how much they will both be changed as they get caught up in the struggle between a people who believe in peace, and those who trust in war.

With Yggdrasil I have created a work that is looking to find a way to reconnect to my Scandinavian roots through storytelling and the medium of interactive software. Yggdrasil is a video game focusing on the story of the great Norse tree of origin Yggdrasil and its sudden reemergence into the modern world. Hearing of its renewed existence creatures and beings from around the globe set out to gain the powers and abilities of Odin, the Norse god, in which the tree is known to possess. The story is then told through competitive play, similar to 90's style arcade games, and built within the framing of a combined tropical and Norse game world. Animals tied to Norse mythical figures battle against each other, under player control, to take Yggdrasil's prize. Yggdrasil was created as a video game to execute aspects of storytelling and interaction within a form relevant to present cultural conditions. Through the making of this piece I attempt to rejoin with my distant and deeply rooted Norse origins while exploring what it means to act as a storyteller. Yggdrasil seeks to explore the necessities of traditional storytelling within the frame of a modern medium. Rather than taking on the conventional and long form of oral narrative Yggdrasil exists as experiment in storytelling created for a disposable society. In this way Yggdrasil acts as a reconstructed bridge and vehicle for myth and tradition. Yggdrasil is a step towards my goal of blending cultural context and mythical history into one tale that is receivable in multiple forms such as interaction and performance. Through Yggdrasil I seek to find a underlying lessons and knowledge in Norse myth through the act of storytelling. The Yggdrasil video game performs as the story as the source, the storyteller as the translator, and the listener as the receiver. These functions combine to form Yggdrasil's storytelling basis.

Rolfsen's beautiful book on knots and links can be read by anyone, from beginner to expert, who wants to learn about knot theory. Beginners find an inviting introduction to the elements of topology, emphasizing the tools needed for understanding knots, the fundamental group and van Kampen's theorem, for example, which are then applied to concrete problems, such as computing knot groups. For experts, Rolfsen explains advanced topics, such as the connections between knot theory and surgery and how they are useful to understanding three-manifolds. Besides providing a guide to understanding knot theory, the book offers 'practical' training. After reading it, you will be able to do many things: compute presentations of knot groups, Alexander polynomials, and other invariants; perform surgery on three-manifolds; and visualize knots and their complements. It is characterized by its hands-on approach and emphasis on a visual, geometric understanding. Rolfsen offers invaluable insight and strikes a perfect balance between giving technical details and offering informal explanations. The illustrations are superb, and a wealth of examples are included. Now back in print by the AMS, the book is still a standard reference in knot theory. It is written in a remarkable style that makes it useful for both beginners and researchers. Particularly noteworthy is the table of knots and links at the end. This volume is an excellent introduction to the topic and is suitable as a textbook for a course in knot theory or 3-manifolds. Other key books of interest on this topic available from the AMS are ""The Shoelace Book: A Mathematical Guide to the Best (and Worst) Ways to Lace your Shoes"" and ""The Knot Book.""

“Remarkable.… Gaiman has provided an enchanting contemporary interpretation of the Viking ethos.”—Lisa L. Hannett, Atlantic Neil Gaiman, long inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction, presents a bravura rendition of the Norse gods and their world from their origin though their upheaval in Ragnarok. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki—son of a giant—blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator. Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants. Through Gaiman’s deft and witty prose, these gods emerge with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.
