Excerpt from Players of the Present, Vol. 1 Tms first volume of Players of the Present be gins a series of biographical sketches, relating to the actors and actresses of our own time in America, which, it is believed, will prove of more than ordinary interest and value. The first book will consist of three parts, in which all the articles will deal with living players, the object being to give reliable statistics regarding them, and not to enter upon the domain of criticism of their different performances. Subsequent volumes will comprise similar sketches of actors who have passed away, but whose names are still a part of American stage history. For the labor and care necessary to the preparation of the biographies we are indebted to the enthusiasm of two of our members, Edwin Francis Edgett and John Houve Clapp. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Lives of the Players, Vol. 1 of 2 Although this compilation will probably be among the most amusing books in the language, still the author can lay claim to very little merit. The subject was suggested by a literary friend, and he had only to select from abundant materials. In one respect he may not be deemed undeserving of some indulgent consideration. The world is well aware that many of the early adventures of those who in riper life have added to our harmless pleasures, are difficult to describe in such a manner as not to render some of the most entertaining objectionable. His object, however, was to produce a parlour-book, and the rule he prescribed to himself was to introduce nothing into it that would not be tolerated on the stage by the most fastidious. In this he is sensible that he may be questioned by those liquorish epicures who care not for the woodcock without the trail. Excerpt from The Chess Player, Vol. 1That such are the requirements of the Chess-world at the present period we have abundant testimony from the steadily-increasing sale of the work, and from the nu merous correspondents which our exertions have called forth, many of whose suggestions are far too valuable for us to neglect. We did hope for advice and cc-operation; but we were not prepared for the kindness and sym Inthetic good-will with which such hints have invariably been accompanied, and which deserve and receive our gratitude, and stimulate us to fresh exertions in our labour of love.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Players and Plays of the Last Quarter Century, Vol. 1: An Historical Summary of Causes and a Critical Review of Conditions as Existing in the American Theatre at the Close of the Nineteenth Century At first thought it may seem inconsistent to begin the tale of the theatre of the last quarter of the nineteenth century with an account of the life and work of Thomas Betterton, the first of the great actors and the especial pride of the theatre of the seventeenth century. When the writer first considered the present work, it was his purpose to stick closely to his text; but as his subject expanded and his own view broadened, he found that, if he were to present any conclusions that were really worth while, he would have to go back to the beginning for the premises from which to make his deductions. The theatre has developed with remarkable consistency. Certain conditions in the thought life of the people have invariably resulted in dramatic buoyancy; opposite conditions have brought dramatic depression.
