Plank Road Winter is a middle-grade historical novel set in rural Wisconsin in the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire and the recent American Civil War, as young Sophie and Hans deal with issues of family, friendship, and the importance of making good choices in difficult times. In October 1871, 13-year-old Sophie Caswell longs to escape the dullness of life in her small farming community. Her grand plan is to find fame far away from Yorkville, Wisconsin. Sophie¿s dreams are thwarted when the Chicago Fire brings chaos to that city, and leads to the arrival of 12-year-old Hans Hoffman and his family at the nearby McEachron farm. While Sophie stubbornly pursues her dreams, Hans struggles to adapt to a world very different from the bustling German neighborhood he once knew. During a memorable winter, Sophie and Hans learn much about life, loss, and the road home, as their families face the challenges of the years following the Civil War. Plank Road Winter is a sequel to Plank Road Summer, which was a story set in Yorkville, Wisconsin, in 1852 when two pioneer girls become involved in the Underground Railroad. Winter takes place a generation later, when those pioneer girls are grown up and married with children of their own.

Download The Road Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A searing, post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son's fight to survive, this "tale of survival and the miracle of goodness only adds to McCarthy's stature as a living master. It's gripping, frightening and, ultimately, beautiful" (San Francisco Chronicle). • From the bestselling author of The Passenger A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other. The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, "each the other's world entire," are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation. Look for Cormac McCarthy's latest bestselling novels, The Passenger and Stella Maris.

Download The Winter Queen Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
An immensely moving account of a strange and magical interracial love affair, The Winter Queen illuminates the Netherlands of the seventeenth century. Amid the dark ambiance of the time, the exiled Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia and Pelagius, a West African prince and former slave, fall in love and secretly marry. With great erudition and compassion, Jane Stevenson vividly renders both a portrait of an extraordinary relationship and a tumultuous political history. Set against a historical backdrop enriched with the art, philosophy, and religion of the Dutch Golden Age, "scene succeeds scene in Vermeer-like richness of color" (Memphis Commercial Appeal).

Download Plank Road Summer Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
This historical novel for young readers, set in 1852 in southeastern Wisconsin between Milwaukee and Chicago, introduces us to two neighboring 13-year-olds, Katie McEachron and her friend Florence Mather, who experience an exciting summer as the wooden plank road that runs by their homes brings intriguing strangers to their dinner tables and the plight of runaway slaves to their consciences. Katie McEachron is a forthright, impulsive girl who has not yet learned the importance of keeping silent. Her friend Florence Mather, a solemn and hardworking girl, came with her family from Cornwall, England. Florence has an eager mind, but her mother is less interested in Florence¿s education than in having her help at the inn. One day in May a stranger arrives at the inn, where neighbors have gathered to plan the first Racine County fair. The visit of the mysterious stranger launches a string of events that will make this a most unforgettable summer for the two girls. Themes include Underground Railroad (fugitive slaves en route to Canada), Transportation (historic plank roads), Rural Pioneer Life and Immigrant Heritage in the Upper Midwest / Great Lakes region. The co-authors are sisters who grew up in locale depicted in the book, where they heard stories of the old plank road from descendants of the early settlers. Hilda Demuth-Lutze, a high school English teacher, lives in rural Northwest Indiana (near Valparaiso). Emily Demuth Ishida, a school library aide and freelance writer, lives in a suburb of Chicago.

Download Hattie's War Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Hattie's War is a middle-grade historical novel about a girl in Milwaukee near the end of the American Civil War. In 1864, eleven-year-old Hattie is far more interested in the emerging sport of base ball than in sewing circles and other women's efforts to support the Union cause. But when her good friend Charlie enlists as a drummer boy with the Thirty-ninth Wisconsin, and her mother becomes involved in the new Soldiers' Home Society, Hattie wants to do her part. Still, must her backyard playing field be turned into a vegetable garden to feed the soldiers? In the course of a year, the enormous costs of the war place great demands on young Hattie, who learns to make sacrifices and work with others, especially to help prepare for the coming flood of returning veteran soldiers. Authors Hilda and Emily Demuth grew up in southeastern Wisconsin, the setting for their historical novels, which include Plank Road Summer and Plank Road Winter.
