Excerpt from Pioneer Missionaries of the Church The cordial reception which has been given in England, as well as America, to "Great Missionaries," which was issued several years ago, has led to the preparation of this volume. Since the noble men whose life story is briefly told in these twenty-six sketches were nearly all of them founders of missions, if not makers of empires, the title "Pioneer Missionaries" seems the only one which clearly defines the scope of the book. If the writer had been so inclined, the limits of space would have prevented any embellishment It has not been an easy task to compress the main features of the biography of a great man "of whom the world is not worthy" into a single chapter, when one longs for two or three hundred pages to tell the thrilling story of toil and sacrifice and triumph. Brief as are these sketches, it is hoped they may be found to give the leading facts in the career of each of these missionary heroes, and that not a few of those who read the book, especially among the students in our colleges, may be inspired "to follow in their train." Excerpt from A. M. Mackay: Pioneer Missionary of the Church Missionary Society to Uganda "It is no sacrifice, as some think, to come here as pioneers of Christianity and of civilization. I would not give my position here for all the world. A powerful race has to be won from darkness to light; superstition and idolatry have to be overthrown; men have to be taught to love God and love their neighbour, which means the uprooting of institutions that have lasted for centuries; labour made noble, the slave set free, knowledge imparted, and wisdom implanted; and, above all, that true wisdom taught which alone can elevate man from a brute to a son of God. Who would not willingly engage in such noble work, and consider it the highest honour on earth to be called to do it?" Excerpt from Messengers of the Churches: First Series; Seven Pioneer Missionaries; With Portraits and Illustrations This little volume is an effort to supply a lack of readily available information regarding some representative early missionaries. This want has been specially felt by Sunday Schools, Christian Endeavor Societies and Epworth Leagues, and also by general readers and many ministers. The names selected represent several Churches and countries, but they are of men marked by such catholicity of spirit as to be claimed by all Christians. We have started with the rise of our present-day missionary enterprises in the latter part of the eighteenth century, and hope, in future series, to trace the record towards our own times. Excerpt from G. Harry Agnew, a Pioneer Missionary Personal acquaintance with Mr. Agnew, and more or less knowledge of his work during all the years he spent on the foreign field, assure me that the char acter of the man and the value of his service to the church render it eminently proper that such a record of his life and labors as follows should be given to the reading public; while many years of personal ac quaintance with the author of the work, as also his established reputation as a writer, and the interest and carefulness with which he has evidently devoted himself to its production, convince me that the volume he has produced will be received and read with general interest and satisfaction. Excerpt from The Pioneer Church of the State of New York Even a hasty glance through the pages of this little work convinces me that its author can claim much merit in this contribution to the Christian literature of our early Catholic missions in this part of the country. The Latin historian, Salust, tells us that he who records and transmits to posterity the noble deeds of ancestors, confers a benefit on the commonwealth, and in a measure deserves praise, no less than those who perform these noble deeds. He considers the writing of history the highest occupation that can occupy human energy and engage the efforts of the mind. And, indeed, history is a prime fact or in the enlightenment, refinement and cultivation of the human race. Excerpt from The Pioneer Church: Or the Story of a New Parish in the West Many of the incidents recorded are founded upon facts within his own knowledge, and he has written with the aid Of some twenty years' experience in western life. It is his thorough conviction, that the great want Of the Church is not so much more missionaries, but more working laymen, who, like Mr. Yates, will not forget Christ and His Church in the eager strife after money and lands; but, seeking first the kingdom Of God and His righteousness, will begin their work for Him when they are planning for themselves. The story Of Grace Church, Arlington, might be repeated in hundreds of villages throughout the Valley Of the Mississippi, would the pioneer Churchmen, appreciating their responsibilities, seize each favorable Opportunity and act with promptness and vigor, instead Of casting blame for the neglect, upon the want Of a missionary at the right time. Grace Church, Kirkwood, the most flourishing country parish in the Diocese Of Missouri, was be gun within the last ten years by lay services in a pri vate parlor; and a tasteful stone church was built, and a class Of fifteen prepared for Confirmation, be fore a Rector had been called. Excerpt from Tale of a Pioneer Church All history is alie, said Sir Robert Walpole; and Landor insists that no history is ever true. But so far as, under the circumstances, lay in my power I have sought, in the following pages, to give the lie to both of these lies. I prefer to believe with Kossuth that history is the revelation of Providence; and with Shenstone, A history will live, though written ever so indifferently. And why should not this be true of the following pages, since every character in them is either a hero or heroine P If for no other reason, then at least on Massillon's principle: Every Christian is born great because he is born for heaven. It has been said that history is philosophy teach ing by example. If so, there is nothing local in the following pages, but rather a universal lesson for the benefit of all.
