A detailed picture is presented of the physical and chemical phenomena that affect the behavior of cobalt-base superalloys. Solid-solution strengthening is obtained from the high-melting metallic elements molybdenum, tungsten, tantalum, and columbium. These elements also participate in precipitation reactions involving their carbides. Precipitation of intermetallic compounds such as Ni3Ti is an important process in cobalt alloys containing appreciable amounts of nickel and titanium. The relationships among microstructure, heat treatment, and mechanical properties of the important commercial alloys are considered, and whenever possible, explained on the basis of the physical and chem cal processes that occur. The most up-to-date coverage of welding metallurgy aspects and weldability issues associated with Ni-base alloys Welding Metallurgy and Weldability of Nickel-Base Alloys describes the fundamental metallurgical principles that control the microstructure and properties of welded Ni-base alloys. It serves as a practical how-to guide that enables engineers to select the proper alloys, filler metals, heat treatments, and welding conditions to ensure that failures are avoided during fabrication and service. Chapter coverage includes: Alloying additions, phase diagrams, and phase stability Solid-solution strengthened Ni-base alloys Precipitation strengthened Ni-base alloys Oxide dispersion strengthened alloys and nickel aluminides Repair welding of Ni-base alloys Dissimilar welding Weldability testing High-chromium alloys used in nuclear power applications With its excellent balance between the fundamentals and practical problem solving, the book serves as an ideal reference for scientists, engineers, and technicians, as well as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses in welding metallurgy.

Soviet nickel-base and cobalt-base alloys for high-temperature operation are described. Wrought and cast turbine blading alloys are included, as well as oxidation-resistant sheet alloys. Mechanical and physical properties of each alloy are assembled, and a detailed list of references is presented. Where possible, the specific applications are noted. It was concluded that the Soviets have made significant contributions to superalloy development, having successfully circumvented a shortage of cobalt and molybdenum. (Author).

Unique in its approach, this introduction to the physics of creep concentrates on the physical principles underlying observed phenomena. As such it provides a resource for graduate students in materials science, metallurgy, mechanical engineering, physics and chemistry as well as researchers in other fields. Following a brief mathematical treatment, the authors introduce creep phenomena together with some empirical laws and observations. The mechanisms of creep and diffusion under varying experimental conditions are subsequently analysed and developed. The second half of the text considers alloying in greater detail as well as exploring the structure and properties of superalloys and stress effects in these materials.
