The main focus of this book is on experimental results from electron-positron and electron-proton colliders and related theoretical questions, particularly on hadron production at energies from 1 to 100 GeV and higher. The topics discussed include photo- and electroproduction of heavy flavours, the photon structure function, total cross section, jet production and resonance production. The future of the field is also discussed, notably experiments at linear photon-photon colliders.

The book contains the proceedings of the 8th Eurographics Rendering Workshop, which took place from 16th to 18th June, 1997, in Saint Etienne, France. After a series of seven successful events the workshop is now well established as the major international forum in the field of rendering and illumination techniques. It brought together the experts of this field. Their recent research results are compiled in this proceedings together with many color images that demonstrate new ideas and techniques. This year we received a total of 63 submissions of which 28 were selected for the workshop after a period of careful reviewing and evaluation by the 27 mem bers of the international program committee. The quality of the submissions was again very high and, unfortunately, many interesting papers had to be rejected. In addition to regular papers the program also contains two invited lectures by Shenchang Eric Chen (Live Picture) and Per Christensen (Mental Images). The papers in this proceedings contain new research results in the areas of Finite-Element and Monte-Carlo illumination algorithms, image-based render ing, outdoor and natural illumination, error metrics, perception, texture and color handling, data acquisition for rendering, and efficient use of hardware. While some contributions report results from more efficient or elegant algo rithms, others pursue new and experimental approaches to find better solutions to the open problems in rendering.

Photo acceleration has dominated the theoretical plasma physics area in recent years and has found application in all subjects where waves in continuous media are studied - plasma physics, astrophysics, and optics. This theory will provide a modern understanding of photon interaction with matter, helping to develop novel accelerators based on laser-plasma interactions, new radiation sources, and even new models for astrophysical objects. Written by a major player in the field, this book describes the general theory of photo acceleration, which allows fluid, kinetic, quantum, and classical electrodynamical approaches to be formulated. It includes examples from plasma physics, cosmology, fiber optics, mathematical physics, particle accelerator physics, and radiation physics.

This volume contains papers presented at the BCEC97 conference, held in Skövde, Sweden, in September 1997. The conference brought together researchers from biology and computer science to discuss the use of computational techniques in biology, as well as the use of biological metaphors in computing. Examples of the work presented in these papers include computer simulations of embryogenesis; algorithms for protein folding prediction; problem solving using DNA computation; neural-network learning in retina implants; and optimisation algorithms inspired by natural evolution.

This volume reports on all aspects of high energy photon interactions using both photon and proton targets. Significant new results from the LEP and HERA experiments as well as from CLEO II and BELLE are presented. These data are confronted with diverse theoretical models. In particular, predictions of QCD in both the perturbative and the non-perturbative sector are extensively discussed. The prospects for gamma-gamma physics at future high energy colliders are also reviewed. In total 72 papers are collected. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in: ? Measurements of solar irradiance, both bolometric and at various wavelengths, over the last two decades have established conclusively that the solar energy flux varies on a wide range of time scales, from minutes to the 11-year solar cycle. The major question is how the solar variability influences the terrestrial climate. The Solar Electromagnetic Radiation Study for Solar Cycle 22 (SOLERS22) is an international research program operating under the auspices of the Solar-Terrestrial Energy Program (STEP) Working Group 1: `The Sun as a Source of Energy and Disturbances'. STEP is sponsored by the Scientific Committee of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) of the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). The main goal of the SOLERS22 1996 Workshop was to bring the international research community together to review the most recent results obtained from observations, theoretical interpretation, empirical and physical models of the variations in the solar energy flux and their possible impact on climate studies. These questions are essential for researchers and graduate students in solar-terrestrial physics.
