Microbial ecology has come of age. A long history of exploratory research and problem definition is admittedly behind us, and outstanding scientists from many regions of the world have contributed major findings to the development of the discipline. The purposes of this review series are to present in one group of volumes an overview of the information that is now spread in an enormous array of technical journals, to have authors in various areas of microbial ecology summarize and present views in depth of their own specialties, and to help promote the continued growth of microbial ecology.
