Excerpt from Phonology and Orthoepy: An Elementary Treatise on Pronunciation, for the Use of Teachers and Schools An accurate and elegant pronunciation forms no small factor of a liberal culture. Careless and uncouth speech is the almost certain index of a general lack of cultivation and refinement. Orthoepy, therefore, has rightfully claimed the attention of the student, even in its past estate. But a new interest and an added value have been given to it by the recent rapid development of phonetic science. What once seemed a field of arbitrary custom, is now coming into view as an orderly realm of natural science. Orthoepy can no longer be studied apart from phonology except by the merest empiricist. Says Prof. Whitney: "The study of phonetics has long been coming forward into more and more prominence as an essential part of the study of language; a thorough understanding of the mode of production of alphabetic sounds, and of their relations to one another as determined by their physical character, has become an indispensable qualification of a linguistic scholar. And he who cannot take to pieces his native utterance, and give a tolerably exact account of every item in it, lacks the true foundation on which everything else should repose." This little book is submitted to the public in the belief that there is a demand for such a work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Success in mastering any language requires knowledge in speaking, reading, and writing the language. The speaking component requires the understanding and use of correct pronunciation, emphasis, and syntactic patterns. The written component requires mastery of the alphabet, spelling, and the ability to write, print, or type the pattern. Very early in the learning process, speakers of the English language become keenly aware of the language's lack of sound to symbol correspondence. To help speech/language researchers, media personnel, individuals learning English as a second language, and others interested in correct pronunciation, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) was devised. Extensively class tested, this book offers a practical understanding approach to phonetics and the IPA in a workbook format. It will be welcomed by professionals, students, and trainees in the fields of communication science, communication disorders, speech pathology, and linguistics.
