The report summarizes research on the following topics: energy fluctuations and rotons in liquid helium; Landau's theory of liquid helium; the motion of a sphere in a perfect fluid; the fundamental laws of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics; interatomic forces in and thermodynamic properties of solid argon; melting phenomena in simple solids; thermodynamics and statistical mechanics of critical lines and critical points, with applications to 3He-4He mixtures, binary liquid systems, and pure substances; experimental work on coexistence curves in binary liquid systems, and experimental and theoretical work on the effect of impurities; experimental equipment for temperature control. A bibliography and list of coworkers are included. (Modified author abstract).

It was found that an electron in an evacuated dewar, falling under the influence of gravity, experiences a net force of 10( -5) to 10( -7) V/m from 300 to about 4.5 degrees-K. At 4.5 degrees-K there is a transition to a net force of zero to within 6 x 10( -12) V/m. This effect has been traced to the creation of a 2-D surface plasma of free electrons on the walls of the copper free-fall tube at the transition temperature.

Creep behavior of cadmium and mercury were investigated in the liquid helium temperature range with emphasis on the possible mechanisms of creep. Creep was found to be temperature dependent at all temperatures of investigation down to 1.75 K, and impurities in the metals had no noticeable effects. Activation energies were determined in the range 1.75-30 K and activation volume measurements were carried out. Creep behavior in the liquid temperature range was found to differ little from the usual low temperature creep at higher temperatures. At liquid helium temperatures, however, creep did not follow low temperature theories, but correction could be made by Alefeld's new rate equation for processes at low temperatures. Quantum tunneling effects on creep were found to be unimportant at temperatures above 0.04 K. (Author).
