Excerpt from Peter Stuyvesant It is impossible to understand the very remarkable character and career of Peter Stuyvesant, the last, and by far the most illustrious, of the Dutch governors of New Amsterdam, without an acquaintance with the early history of the Dutch colonies upon the Hudson and the Delaware. The Antiquarian may desire to look more fully into the details of the early history of New York. But this brief, yet comprehensive narrative, will probably give most of the information upon that subject, which the busy, general reader can desire. In this series of "The Pioneers and Patriots of America" the reader will find, in the "Life of De Soto," a minute description of the extreme south and its inhabitants, when the Mississippi rolled its flood through forests which the foot of the white man had never penetrated. Excerpt from Peter Stuyvesant: Director-General for the West India Company in New Netherland Original sources of information concerning the early Dutch settlers of Manhattan Island are neither many nor rich. The two volumes of Holland Documents, published by the State of New York, contain the official papers of the colony and the West India Company. Some contemporary descriptions exist, of which Van der Donck's is the best. But the Dutch wrote very little, and on the whole their records are meagre. Concerning their social conditions, the best authority is to be found in the pro ceedings of the burgomasters and schepens, preserved inthe City Hall and in the books of the 'surrogate's and Register's offices. These sources and the collections of the New York Historical Society have been relied upon in the preparation of this book. The author's thanks are due to Mr. William kebby, Librarian of the Historical Society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
