A comprehensive book covering all aspects of the subject in temperate areas, and advocating a whole-farm approach to management Incorporating the most up-do-date thinking on organic pest and disease management, this is an essential reference work for all those wishing to develop a good understanding of the subject. The authors provide a practical guide to organic pest and disease management practices. They advocate a whole-farm approach to pest and disease management, which uses rotations and the full farm landscape to manage pest and disease outbreaks. The book covers the scientific principles underlying pest and disease management in organic systems; long-term preventative methods, based on sensitive landscape management, and shorter-term reactive measures; the cost implications of different approaches; the monitoring and decisionmaking processes that farmers and growers should use; and the key pests and diseases of field vegetables, cereals, and green manures, and their management in organic systems.

The breakthrough resource for fruit and vegetable growers at every scale who want to go ‘beyond organic’ and build higher soil quality and fertility using fewer inputs through a unique ecosystem-balancing approach “Atthowe’s book takes ecological farming to the next level. It is packed with useful, field-tested, innovative techniques for farming more gently without sacrificing productivity. . . This is the future of farming. I highly recommend this book.”—Ben Hartman, author of The Lean Farm The Ecological Farm is the go-to guide for ecological growing, with a unique focus on reduced tillage, minimizing farm and garden inputs, and pest control. Reflecting the wisdom that farmer, consultant, and educator Helen Atthowe and her late husband, Carl Rosato, gained during decades of farming experience, this book guides readers on how to reduce or eliminate the use of outside inputs of fertilizer or pesticides—even those that are commonly used on certified organic orchards and market gardens. In clear language and with color photographs, charts, and graphs throughout, the book emphasizes the importance of managing the details of an entire growing system over the full life of the enterprise. Based on advances in scientific research in ecological food production, farmers, homesteaders, permaculturists, and gardeners alike will learn methods to: design a farm system that maintains a growing root in the soil year-round to feed the microbial community instead of just crops. strengthen the “immune system” of a farm or garden supply crop needs using only on-farm inputs such as cover crops and living mulch maximize the presence of beneficial insects and microbes that support healthy crop development minimize ecological impact in dealing with insect pest and disease problems The Ecological Farm also features a crop-by-crop guide to growing more than 25 of the most popular and profitable vegetables and fruits, including specific management advice for dealing with pests and diseases. The Ecological Farm makes complex, sometimes messy, ecological concepts and practices understandable to all growers, and makes healthy farming—in which nature is invited to participate—possible. "[This book] will guide all of us as we learn to farm in harmony with an ecosystem and to become obedient to the whole rather than being distracted by the urge to tinker with the parts.” —Wes Jackson, cofounder and president emeritus, The Land Institute

JADAM Natural Pesticide (JNP) SIMPLE DIY solution can reduce pesticide costs by more than 95%! You no longer have to rely on commercial pesticides. It is a powerful DIY solution that you have never experienced before. JNP is an organic pesticide that complies with USDA Organic Regulations. You can wash and eat immediately after spraying. You can also see amazingly clear and detailed photos from this book. JADAM developed several core natural pesticide technologies manufacturing methods so that farmers can solve natural pesticides themselves and all technologies disclosed without patents. The use of self-manufacturing technology can dramatically reduce costs while increasing the control effect. Furthermore, it can completely replace chemical pesticides. Farmers have been relying on agricultural input wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now it is time to escape from the helpless high-cost agriculture dragged by giant agricultural corporations. You will find the practical possibility of Ultra-Low-Cost organic farming that can reduce the cost of pesticides by more than 95%. I shout to farmers around the world through this book. Free yourself from the subordination of agricultural chemicals and agricultural materials companies that you have had to be bound for a lifetime. All farmers who are left destitute and desperate, losing the initiative of technology by commercial enterprises and falling into a level of a mere consumer, take the initiative again. I declare that JADAM raised the flag for the liberation of agricultural technology.

Advisory work, by its very nature, is an intermediary between the re search worker and those who apply the results of his research. The challenge of advisory work is to devise means of and find pathways for transmitting research results to the user, overcome the reluctance of the latter to change, and often combine novel ideas with well-estab lished traditions. Nowhere is this challenge greater than in farming. This is especially true in developing countries, where the gap in the educational level between research workers and farmers may be ex tremely wide. Moreover, village-level advisers are often overburdened with non-professional functions and are not sufficiently backed up by well-trained professional advisers. Thus, in many of these countries there is a serious discrepancy between the knowledge available and that needed and actually applied on the farm. Advisory work in crop protection is no exception, but profits to some extent from two facts: (1) because of the potentially catastrophic nature of pest attack, governments often operate a supervisory crop protection service, the staff of which may be able to dispense some pest control advice; and (2) the staff of pesticide distributors tends to fill, at least in part, the need for advice on how to fight pests and dis eases with chemicals.
