INTRODUCTION The last century has witnessed a rapid increase in the population of the elderly people in the developed and industrialized countries. This phenomenon is not restricted to the western world only, but many countries such as ours are now feeling the impact of this transition. This situation could be attributed to a combination of factors, such as increase in age, longevity, and decreased death rates due to advancement in the field of medicine, improvement of life expectancy at birth, and enhancement in the average span of life. India ranks fourth in terms of absolute size of elderly population. In India, the family is traditionally regarded as the primary source of social, economic, psychological, and physical support for the aged. According to the Hindu philosophy and tradition, it is the duty of the younger members to look after the elderly persons, and take care of them. Older persons often have multiple needs for support. Functional, financial, emotional, social, and environmental needs often cluster. These are often provided by immediate family (spouse, co-resident sons, daughters and daughters-in-law) members and intimate friends and proximate. Traditionally, the task of caring for elderly in Indian families is predominantly by women, be it the spouse, daughter or daughter-in-law. But as the role of the family and especially, of women is changing to meet the new demands created by economic transitions, the family's ability and commitment for caring for its older members is diminishing. The traditional sense of duty and obligation of the younger generation towards their older generation is being eroded. As more and more women are becoming active in their own careers and beginning to work full time, the task for caring for the aged is becoming more difficult. The older generation is caught between the decline in traditional values on one hand, and the absence of adequate social security system on the other (Gormal, 2003),

Drawing on interdisciplinary, cross-national perspectives, this open access book contributes to the development of a coherent scientific discourse on social exclusion of older people. The book considers five domains of exclusion (services; economic; social relations; civic and socio-cultural; and community and spatial domains), with three chapters dedicated to analysing different dimensions of each exclusion domain. The book also examines the interrelationships between different forms of exclusion, and how outcomes and processes of different kinds of exclusion can be related to one another. In doing so, major cross-cutting themes, such as rights and identity, inclusive service infrastructures, and displacement of marginalised older adult groups, are considered. Finally, in a series of chapters written by international policy stakeholders and policy researchers, the book analyses key policies relevant to social exclusion and older people, including debates linked to sustainable development, EU policy and social rights, welfare and pensions systems, and planning and development. The book’s approach helps to illuminate the comprehensive multidimensionality of social exclusion, and provides insight into the relative nature of disadvantage in later life. With 77 contributors working across 28 nations, the book presents a forward-looking research agenda for social exclusion amongst older people, and will be an important resource for students, researchers and policy stakeholders working on ageing.

Family caregiving affects millions of Americans every day, in all walks of life. One of the fastest growing populations in the United States is older adults. To better support the aging population society needs to understand ways to improve their quality of life. The quality of life in older adults is measured by their physical and mental well-being, life satisfaction, and the connection of social relationships (McGaha, 2016). Older adults that have a low quality of life can develop depression, loneliness, poor physical health, and suicide. Social relationships are associated with improving the quality of life in older adults. This study focuses on the literature that pertains to informal social relationships that have been shown be beneficial for older adults, such as friends, family and children, and partner and spouse. In addition, social relationships reduce the risk of mental health issues and suicidal ideation. Literature supported the findings that art therapy is one intervention that mental health professionals can effectively implement for treatment to improve the quality of life in older adults. This research looked at different forms of art therapy's, such as visual arts (painting, sculpting, and drawing) and expressive arts (music, drama, chorus, and dance). Treatments and intervention programs have become important to mental health practitioners and senior centers to promote a better well-being for older adults. This study also looked at policies and practice implications that are recommended to improve the well-being in older adults. It is recommended that social workers create more programs in senior centers and living facilities that require more social engagement with social relationships that will improve the quality of life in older adults.
