This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines Minimum Performance Standards (MPS), qualification requirements, and minimum documentation requirements for side-facing seats in civil rotorcraft, transport aircraft, and general aviation aircraft. The goal is to achieve comfort, durability, and occupant protection under normal operational loads and to define test and evaluation criteria to demonstrate occupant protection when a side-facing seat/occupant/restraint system is subjected to statically applied ultimate loads and to dynamic test conditions set forth in Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 23, 25, 27, or 29.While this document addresses system performance, responsibility for the seating system is divided between the seat supplier and the installation applicant. The seat supplier's responsibility consists of meeting all the seat system performance requirements and obtaining and supplying to the installation applicant all the data prescribed by this document. The installation applicant has the final responsibility in assuring that all requirements for safe seat installation have been met. The original release of the document is directly linked to AS8049B. This revision updates the document to align with AS8049C. AS8049/1B has been reaffirmed to comply with the SAE Five-Year Review policy.

This Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Aerospace Standard (AS) Annex defines Minimum Performance Standards (MPS), qualification requirements, and minimum documentation requirements for side-facing seats in civil rotorcraft, transport aircraft, and general aviation aircraft. The goal is to define test and evaluation criteria to demonstrate occupant protection when a single-occupant side-facing seat/occupant/restraint system is subjected to statically applied ultimate loads and to dynamic test conditions set forth in the applicable 14, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 23, 25, 27 or 29.While this Annex addresses system performance, responsibility for the seating system is divided between the seat supplier and the installation applicant. The seat supplier's responsibility consists of meeting all the seat system performance requirements and obtaining and supplying to the installation applicant all the data prescribed by this document. The installation applicant has the final responsibility in assuring that all requirements for safe seat installation have been met. Single Place side facing seats are currently installed on Transport Category aircraft by Special Conditions. This Aircraft Standard describes dynamic test procedures and pass/fail criteria for single place side-facing seats that are considered to provide an equivalent level of safety when compared to fore and aft facing seats. These test criteria are considered the Minimum Performance Standard for that would allow for TSO-C127 approval for single-place side facing seats, and streamline the certification effort for the installation of these seats onto the aircraft.

The seat supplier's responsibility consists of meeting all the seat system performance requirements and obtaining and supplying to the installation applicant all the data prescribed by this AS. This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) documents a common understanding of terms, compliance issues, and occupant injury criteria to facilitate the design and certification of oblique facing passenger seat installations specific to Part 25 aircraft.The applicability of the criteria listed in this current release is limited to seats with an occupant facing direction greater than 18° and no greater than 45° relative to the aircraft longitudinal axis. Seats installed at angles greater than 30° relative to the aircraft longitudinal axis must have an energy absorbing rest or shoulder harness and must satisfy the criteria listed in Table 2. Later revisions are intended to provide criteria for other facing directions.Performance criteria for forward and aft facing seats are provided in AS8049 and for side facing seats in AS8049/1.This document contains the same content as superseded ARP6316 with additional information included to align this Aerospace Standard with AS8049/1 regarding the use of the femur angular rotation sensor.Although the issues and criteria presented in this document are common with oblique facing seats installed in Part 23 aircraft and Parts 27 and 29 rotorcraft, these standards have not been validated for these types of aircraft. The use of oblique facing passenger seats has become prevalent for business and first class seating arrangements on many airlines. Industry standard test requirements and occupant injury criteria that suppliment the requirements of AS8049 are required for these types of seats. This standard supersedes ARP6316.

This Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) defines acceptable methods for determining the seat reference point (SRP), and the documentation requirements for that determination, for passenger and crew seats in Transport Aircraft, Civil Rotorcraft, and General Aviation Aircraft. The methods for determining the Seat Reference Point (SRP) for aircraft seats were originally contained in AS8049 and were recently moved to ARP5526. The SRP is a feature of the seat that is used in multiple SAE aircraft seat documents, as well as regulatory standards and guidance. These methods should be located in a separate document, where they can be referenced by other documents, maintained independent of changes to other documents and eventually stabilized. The method used for determining the Buttock Reference Point (BRP) for aircraft seats has not been clearly defined, is a feature that is used in multiple documents, and should also be located in this document.
