The Bureau of Mines laboratory tested the response of a commercially available real-time aerosol monitor (GCA RAM-I) to various dusts. Monitor measurements were recorded, averaged, and compared with simultaneous gravimetric measurements of each test dust. Tests usually lasted several hours. The test dusts of various particle size distributions used included coal, limestone, and a commercially available test dust. For each particular dust, the monitor response was linear and correlated well with mass concentration over the range of about 0.5 to 10 mg/ma3 The monitor can estimate a 2.0-mg/m3 respirable coal dust concentration within as little as ± 6 pet with 95 pet confidence. The monitor must, however, be calibrated with the dust to be measured because the instrument response is affected by the type of dust particle. The average monitor response to a mass concentration of coal dust was approximately twice the average monitor response to the same mass concentration of limestone dust.

Aerosol Technology in Hazard Evaluation is the fifth in the series of books on the subject of aerosol technology. This series is organized into nine chapters that cover the properties, sampling, and respirable activity of aerosol. After briefly describing the nature of an inhalation hazard, the book examines the properties, measurement, and significance of geometric diameters of aerosols, as well as the shape factors relating them to various particulate properties. The mathematical description of size distributions and the statistics of sampling from a lognormal distribution of particle sizes are provided. This paper presents findings on the accuracy of real-time smoke particulate monitors when compared with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Federal Reference Method (FRM) gravimetric sampler. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, National Technology and Development Program (T&D), performed the last evaluation on real-time smoke particulate monitors during 2006. Since that time, the manufacturers have refined and upgraded many of the real-time smoke monitors T&D evaluated. The Forest Service Air Resource Management Program asked T&D to performa market search for new, portable, real-time smoke particulate monitors and provide an update on their accuracy when compared with an FRM gravimetric sampler. This paper provides information on the accuracy of Met One Instruments Inc., E-Samplers and E-BAMs and a TSI Inc., DustTrak DRX Aerosol Monitor 8533 when compared with an FRM sampler.

Measurements of the dilution of air contaminants between worker breathing zone and area air samplers were made by releasing a test fluorescent aerosol in workrooms equipped with aerosol surveillance systems. These data were used to evaluate performance and suggest improvements in design of alarming air monitor systems. In one workroom studied, average half-hour breathing zone air concentration needed to trigger alarm was found to be 960 times the maximum permissible air concentration for occupational exposure to soluble 239Pu (MPC/sub a/). It was shown that alternative monitor placement in this room could result in decreasing average triggering concentration to 354 times the MPC/sub a/. Analysis of data from impaction-autoradiographic sizing comparison studies showed average disintegration to track ratio called track efficiency factor, to be 2.7 +- 0.4.
