It was the centre for knowledge and solution for people’s problem in life. Over the years religious institutes for education started operating from inside these mosques and were named Madrasa. These Islamic educational institutes play a crucial role for the people of the Muslim community. Madrasas are now considered to be supplementary schools for this specific community. Children are sent to Madrasas from an early age to learn the religious scripture and identify their roots and culture. Changing times have focussed on the real applicability of Madrasa education. Insider elaboration of the facts of Madrasa education is undoubtedly questionable. Out dated pedagogy and corporal punishment for behaviour modification is a daily routine which is seriously harming the children. These children face an uncertain future and are deprived from quality education. Children from poor family attending madrasas for free education end with very little knowledge about secular subjects.

Through an ethnographic study of schooling in the Republic of Tatarstan, this book explores how competing notions of nationhood and belonging are constructed, articulated and negotiated within educational spaces. Amidst major political and ideological moves toward centralization in Russia under the Putin presidency, this small provincial town in Tatarstan provides a unique case of local attempts to promote and preserve minority languages and cultures through education and schooling. While there exists scholarly works on madrasas in India during medieval times and the colonial period, there is hardly anything on the conditions of madrasas today, and those are by and large based on secondary literature and not grounded in detailed empirical investigation. This work, through ethnographic study undertaken at two madrasas in Mubarakpur in Uttar Pradesh, shows how Indian madrasas represent a diverse array of ideological orientations which is mostly opposed to each other’s interpretation of Islam. If madrasas are about the dissemination of Islamic knowledge, then they also problematize and compete over how best to approach that knowledge; in the process they create and sustain a wide variety of possible interpretations of Islam.
