Bassist Andy Fraser joined Free at the age of fifteen, and was still a teenager when he co-wrote 'All Right Now'. The song became one of rock s most-played and best-loved anthems. After leaving Free in 1972 Fraser went on to write for Robert Palmer, Chaka Khan, Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart and many others. A period of personal discovery led to Fraser coming out as gay in the 1980s. He contracted AIDS and became gravely ill, but rallied with treatment and was healthy for a long period. He remained active as a musician and songwriter. He finally succumbed to his illness in March 2015, at the age of 62. In this candid memoir Fraser reflects on early fame, fatherhood, coming to terms with his sexuality and HIV-status, and life on the road in the golden age of rock.

Affectionately known as 'Koss', Paul Kossoff's playing touched people. It still does today, more than forty years after his sad and untimely death at the age of twenty-five. This authorised biography pays fitting tribute to a much-loved and widely admired musician whose influence and inspiration is still very evident. It's all here: Kossoff's musical childhood, his formative years with Black Cat Bones, forming Free at seventeen, that group's dizzying success, breakup, reforming and dissolution, the solo years, Back Street Crawler - the sessions, the tours and big concerts, the triumphs, the tragedies and the heartbreak - J.P. James takes the reader right there. Over four distinct sections, Kossoff's many guitars and the equipment he used to make them sing are fully documented; a brand-new detailed analysis of Kossoff's distinctive playing style and technique is presented for the first time; a broad overview of Kossoff's creative life draws on the voices of family, friends and fellow musicians; and finally, Kossoff's musical influences, approach to playing and his wider musical interests, hopes and dreams are explored - all drawn from his own words. Cramming so much into his short years, Paul Kossoff left a rich musical legacy, and he is indeed All Right Now. Thoroughly researched and sensitively written, given often in Kossoff's own words and packed with anecdotes from those who were there, musicians and fans alike will enjoy this authoritative and comprehensive biography.

The Gibson Les Paul is possibly the electric guitar most associated with rock ’n’ roll. The result of a collaboration between Gibson’s Ted McCarty and jazz guitarist Les Paul in response to the success of Fender’s Telecaster, the Les Paul has gone on to become a prized instrument played by most of the greatest guitarists in rock history. This massive illustrated history of the guitar examines its prehistory and origins as well as its evolution in the 60-plus years since its 1952 introduction. In addition to the Standards and Customs guitarists admire so much, author Dave Hunter also gives ample coverage to variations like Les Paul Juniors, Melody Makers, and SGs. And to bring the music to life, there are profiles of players well known for using Les Pauls and their offspring through the years, including Hubert Sumlin, Carl Perkins, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Peter Green, Paul Kossoff, Jimmy Page, Neil Young, Peter Frampton, Keith Richards, Bill F Gibbons, Bob Marley, Mick Ronson, Steve Jones, Johnny Thunders, Angus Young, and more. Illustrated throughout with studio photography of the guitars, candid and performance photography of the artists, and relevant memorabilia, this book is prefect for music lovers and guitar enthusiasts.

These are the guitars so famous that their names are often household words: B. B. King's Lucille, Eric Clapton's Blackie, Stevie Ray Vaughan's First Wife, Billy F Gibbons' Pearly Gates, Neil Young's Old Black, and many more. Here's the first-ever illustrated history of the actual guitars of the stars that made the music. Other best-selling guitar histories look at the rank-and-file models, but this book is unique in profiling the actual "star guitars"--the million-dollar babies, such as the 1968 Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix burned at Woodstock, which sold at Sotheby's auction house in 1993 for $1,300,000. Amateurs buy guitars to emulate the stars--Clapton's Strat, Slash's Les Paul--and this book explains the stars' modifications, thus showing how others can recreate those famous tones.

Described by Empire Magazine as 'Britain's best ever blues singer', John Martyn was one of rock music's last real mavericks. Despite chronic addiction to alcohol and drugs, he produced a string of matchless albums. Loved by fans and critics, loathed by ex-wives and managers, he survived the music business he despised for forty years. This book documents his upbringing in Glasgow and rise through the Scottish and London folk scenes of the 1960s, his many career highs and lows, and his friendships with the great lost souls of British rock music, Nick Drake and Paul Kossoff.
