Excerpt from The Patterson Family: A Geneological History Staying there about two years they went to a farm in Washington county, same state, where they lived eight or nine years. While on this farm their youngest daughter Rebecca was born and their eldest daughter Jane was married to William Cassidy. In the spring of 1819 John Patterson entered a farm in Harrison township, Carroll-co., Ohio, then Stark-co., drove a stake and returned to his home in Pennsylvania. He then took his two sons - Robert, aged 18, and John, aged 16 - across the river to Steubenville, and from there they went alone on foot to Centerville, now Carrollton. From the inn where their father had arranged for their lodging and board they followed a deer path and stopped at the deer lick, which marked the place of their future home. In one week's time, with the use of two axes and an augur, they built a cabin and straightway went to clearing the land. Then in the fall of 1819 John and Mary Patterson, and the others of the family, joined the two sons in their new home. They built a log cabin on the east side of the farm. John Patterson died September 25, 1827. On March 8, 1833, John and Robert Patterson entered into an agreement that at their mother's death John Patterson would give Robert Patterson a deed for his share of the farm, the east half, and should receive from Robert Patterson as consideration money $400.
