Excerpt from Passing the Love of Women, Vol. 2 of 3: A Novel Never, Indeed, had Gilbert felt so uncomfortable. He had been introduced to his aunt with so much ceremony and importance that he felt it could only appear to her like provocation and insult, and he had hardly been permitted to speak to his cousin Philippa. Sir Owen had greeted the girl with that sort of exaggerated deference with which he was apt to point his real contempt, and her mother had come to her relief by sending her away to keep her brother company. Excerpt from Passing the Love of Women, Vol. 1 of 3: A Novel Martin Cartwright stood for a few moments on the threshold of his shop, with his confidential clerk beside him, before he braced himself to plunge into the darkness. Happy's the man, ' he said, with a good-natured laugh, who has got no home to go to, or whose home, like yours, Mitchell, is only across the street. Goodnight - I shall find my way.' The years 1890-1945 saw an unprecedented outpouring of fiction focused on British university life, much of it reflecting the drastic change that had swept through the higher education system in the late nineteenth century. Among these narratives, a significant subgroup focused on the lives of women students, newly admitted to the structures of higher education system, their presence still stridently, and sometimes even violently, opposed, especially at Oxbridge. These novels and short stories collected here, largely unknown today, were widely discussed and debated in the public sphere during the early twentieth century, contributing not only to the formation of public knowledge and opinion about education through cultural figures like the ‘Girton Girl’ or the ‘undergraduette,’ but also sparking debate about many wider social and cultural issues, from the place of the women writer in the literary scene to the emergence of new discourses around psychology and the body. The majority have not been reprinted since their original publication, and until now have been rarely available to scholars. The publication of Women’s University Narratives, 1890-1945, therefore, provides a major new resource for scholarship in many areas, including women’s studies, educational history, and literary and cultural modernism.

This is volume two of a three-volume set that brings together a rich collection of primary source materials on flirtation and courtship in the nineteenth-century. Introductory essays and extensive editorial apparatus offer historical and cultural contexts of the materials included Throughout the long nineteenth-century, a woman’s life was commonly thought to fall into three discrete developmental stages; personal formation and a gendered education; a young woman’s entrance onto the marriage market; and finally her emergence at the apogee of normative femininity as wife and mother. In all three stages of development, there was an unspoken awareness of the duplicity at the heart of this carefully cultivated femininity. What women were taught, no matter their age, was that if you desired anything in life, it behooved you to perform indifference. This meant that for women, the art of flirtation and feigning indifference were viewed as essential survival skills that could guarantee success in life. These three volumes document the many ways in which nineteenth-century women were educated in this seemingly universal wisdom, but just as frequently managed to manipulate, subvert, and navigate their way through such proscribed norms to achieve their own desires. Presenting a wide range of documents from novels, memoirs, literary journals, newspapers, plays, poetry, songs, parlour games, and legal documents, this collection will illuminate a far more diverse set of options available to women in their quest for happiness, and a new understanding of the operations of courtship and flirtation, the "central" concerns of a nineteenth-century woman’s life. The volumes will be of interest to scholars of history, literature, gender and cultural studies, with an interest in the nineteenth-century.
