Historical novel between 1875-2003 based on the author's great-grandmother, grandmother, and mother. Sarah lost her mother at age eight and was hired out as a farm hand. She later birthed fourteen children. Her daughter Esther was injured by a drunk driver before Helen's birth, resulting in her right side being spastic and contractured. These women guided their families through calamities, shame, joy, and struggle, enduring unimaginable hardship. They speak with a true voice, capturing the spirit of women typical of their era. Readers will find their stories enlightening, worthy, and empowering, prompting their own long-forgotten family memories and oft-told stories. Judy Lambert's degrees were in nursing; she taught nurses, practicing in university and hospital settings in the specialty of oncology. She is married with two daughters and three grandchildren. Even when young, she realized the fortune of her resilient heritage, and recognizes the value for her daughters and grand- children to embrace this daunting legacy.

Although Thomas Crapper is most commonly associated with the invention of the flushing toilet, his models were in fact the result of a long line of improvements to earlier designs which date back to ancient times. This book is an ideal introduction to the history of the toilet, tracing its development from the primitive - and very smelly - privy maiden to today's one-piece, all-ceramic WC. Illustrated with superb photographs, this book tells the intimate story of the lavatory.

THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING and THE BOOK OF PRIVY COUNSELING are the first explorations in the English language of the soul’s quest for God. Written in Middle English by an unknown fourteenth-century mystic, THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING expresses with beauty a message that has inspired such great religious thinkers as St. John of the Cross and Teilhard de Chardin, as well as countless others in search of God. Offering a practical guide to the life of contemplation, the author explains that ordinary thoughts and earthly concepts must be buried beneath a “cloud of forgetting,” while our love must rise toward a God hidden in the “cloud of unknowing.” THE BOOK OF PRIVY COUNSELING, also included in this volume, is a short and moving text on the way to enlightenment through a total loss of self and a consciousness only of the divine. William Johnston, an authority on fourteenth-century mysticism and spirituality, provides an accessible discussion of the works, detailing what is known about the history of the texts and their author. In a new foreword, Huston Smith draws on his extensive knowledge of the varieties of religious experience to illuminate the relevance of these works for contemporary readers.

John Knox (1514-1572) was more a reformer of the Scottish Kirk than he was a systematic theologian, as his collected works will attest. Knox had a profound influence upon theological and ecclesiological developments in Scotland both purely by the force of his personality and by the role he played in shaping the Scots Confession and the Book of Common Order. Knox was an ordained priest and served as a tutor prior to his conversion to Protestantism. Volumes One and Two: Knox's famous 'History of the Reformation in Scotland'. Apologetics as much as history, 'History of the Reformation in Scotland' was immediately seized and suppressed when it initially appeared, yet it has remained available in various editions for over 400 years. Volume Three: 'Earliest Writings', 1548-1554 Volume Four: 'Writings from Frankfurt and Geneva'. These writings in exile include Knox's famous 'First Blast of the Trumpet against the Monstrous Regiment of Women', his violent diatribe against Mary of Guise. Volume Five: 'On Predestination' and other writings. 'On Predestination, in Answer to the Cavillations by an Anabaptist' is Knox's longest theological work and presents a position of rigid predestinationism. Volume Six: Letters, Prayer, and other shorter writings with a sketch of his life.
