Excerpt from Parochial Lectures on the Psalms It has been the wish of the author of the follow ing exposition of the Psalms, to put the reader in possession of the wealth beneath, as well as that upon their surface. This he has aimed to aecom plish by so explaining the language, imagery, and allusions, historical or personal, of the verse or psalm, as to bring out the thought of the inspired singer, together with the feeling with which we may suppose him to have uttered it. His great aim has been to present all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ and his gospel, a book of thoughts on the Psalms, derived directly from a truthful exposi tion of the Psalms themselves. He has laboured to get at the mind of the Spirit in the psalm, and in every part of the psalm, and having, as he hoped. Excerpt from The Varied Beauty of the Psalms These chapters contain the substance of a course of lectures delivered at Temple emanu-el, New York, on Monday morn ings, in the months of November and De cember, 1915. The lectures included i1 lustrative readings from the Psalms and general literature, which probably formed their chief interest, and which are, at most, but alluded to in this little book. In publishing the latter, however, the author hopes he may help point out some of the many beauties of Israel's immortal poetry. When first given, the lectures were heard by a group of loyal and appreciative hear ers, to all of whom the author feels grate ful, and to one of the most faithful and most generous of whom he has taken the liberty of dedicating these pages. Excerpt from Ten Studies in the Psalms There is, perhaps, no part of the Old Testament which speaks so simply and directly to the universal heart as the Psalter. Yet even the most familiar psalms come home to us with increased freshness and power when, by sympathetic study, we have traveled back to the world in which their writers stood, and learned to look out upon it with their eyes. The short studies in this volume are an attempt to interpret, in this way, a few of the psalms that deal with important aspects of the religious life, and to show their vital bearing upon the life of to-day. In their doubts, struggles, and aspirations, those ancient men are very near us, and they speak to us with an accent that is strangely modern. I have tried to make this plain in the course of the exposition, and to illustrate their kinship with us by quotation from modern writers. The treatment of the psalms here selected is expository. But, without. Being didactic or homiletic, I have at the same time sought to make it practically helpful, by gathering up the study of each psalm in a series of personal questions, which are intended both to carry the reader into the heart of the psalm, and also to enable him to search his own inner life. I desire here to express my obligation to Messrs. Charles Serib ner's Sons for their generous courtesy in allowing me to reprint, from my volume on The Messages of the Psalmists in The Mes sages of the Bible Series the paraphrase of the psalms here selected for study. Excerpt from A Fresh Approach to the Psalms The following chapters do not make any claim to originality. There is nothing they contain which is not familiar to Old Testament scholars but it is hoped that they may be of interest and use to many who are not experts, for the writer has been at pains, apart from his own researches, to consult a number of the most modern commentaries on the Psalms, as well as some which are not of recent date. Moreover, some subjects are dealt with, which, for Obvious reasons, are not discussed in Commentaries; but which, nevertheless, have a certain bearing on the study of the Psalms. Readers who are not in a position to consult many books, may be glad to have these subjects placed before them we mean, such subjects as the music of the ancient east; music among the Hebrews; the liturgical use of the psalms the psalms in the worship of the ancient synagogue the origin of the synagogue; the psalms in the Christian Church. Excerpt from A Manual of the Book of Psalms: Or the Subject-Contents of All the Psalms Luther takes occasion also, from numberless pas sages in the Psalms, to describe, point out, and dis tinguish the true church of God in the midst of the earth, and the signs by which she may be known from all other churches - that she is that company of poor and af icted people, who are burdened with sins, filled with fears, covered with infirmities, and despised by the world, and considered both by the wicked, and by formal professors of religion, to be the last people likely to be the church of God. He repeatedly shews, however, that such, not withstanding their rejection by all, are the true people and church of God and that it is unto such, and such only, that all the promises of grace and mercy in Christ, and of help, provision, and defence in this world, are made; For (saith Luther) if you will look through the whole Bible, you will find, that God is not the God of the rich, the proud, the secure, &c. But of the poor, the fearful, the af icted, and the helpless; who cannot do without his daily mercy and help, either in the things of this world, or of that which is to come.' Consequently all reference to Hebrew words and constructions has been omitted except when really necessary to bring out the correct meaning.
