2019 Reprint of 1905 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. "What is Paper Sloyd? The preface to Paper Sloyd: A Handbook for Primary Grades by Ednah Anne Rich defines Sloyd as "tool work so arranged and employed as to stimulate and promote vigorous, intelligent self-activity for a purpose, which the worker recognizes as good." "Sloyd, which means "skilled labor" in Swedish, was originally a system of manual training focusing on woodworking and its associated tools. In the case of paper sloyd, the focus is on creating useful objects with paper, and the tools are things the homeschool handy-mom is likely to have on hand -- pencils, rulers, scissors, glue, string, compasses, and hole punches."--DIY Homeschooler. Rich's work has become a classic, especially within the world of homeschooling and do-it-yourself. Our edition is a remastered facsimile of the original edition, including an enhancement of the original photos and illustrations.

An introduction to a handicraft for young children that strengthens skills of paper folding, paper cutting and pasting, and ruler drawing while constructing models from paper. Plans for 44 models are included in the book, some simpler and others more complex. The first ten models start with a square piece of paper to form simple objects such as a box and a basket, or more complex ones such as a cart or a barn. Next come 23 models that begin as oblongs, and a final 11 from various irregular shapes. Detailed instructions accompany the plans. Rather than a series of projects to be worked through from beginning to end, consider starting with projects with a few simple pieces and few instructions, and then, as skills increase, choosing projects that match your skill level and catch your fancy. This edition differs from the original in having each model on its own page or pagespread, with instructions for each component placed as closely as possible to its graphic representation. The dimensions on the plans match the dimensions in the instructions and are sized to be easily readable. The components in each plan are represented as large as possible on the page, while still in proportion to each other, so the dimensions on the plans will seldom match the measurements on your ruler.

A guide to living fully and humanely by learning the wisdom of authentic manual work. Most of us modern people live in a world of constant abstraction, immersed in our heads and our screens. But there is a deeper wisdom in working with your hands in the real world. In The Wisdom of Our Hands, craftsman and educator Doug Stowe shows how working with handcrafts, either professionally or as a hobby, is essential for a full education and a full life. Based on his 45 years as a woodworker and 20 years as a teacher of handcrafts, Stowe argues that human beings have a natural need to express themselves creatively through tangible work. The use of one's hands and whole body to make physical things promotes both physical and mental health and fosters a sense of mastery in both young and adult students. A life of craftsmanship is also an opportunity and obligation to define one's own values. Drawing on his experiences living and working in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, a town dedicated to handcrafts and arts, Stowe demonstrates how craft work creates community, forges deeper social bounds, and fosters a saner attitude about the value of relative value of human labor and material goods. A quietly radical and spiritual blueprint for a deeper and more connected way of life, The Wisdom of Our Hands is a transformational book.
