Excerpt from Papago Music The songs of a desert people are here presented, and will be found to contain interesting contrasts to the songs of the woodland, prairie, and high plateau tribes previously considered. The Papago are a gentle, agricultural tribe living in Sonora, Mexico, and southern Arizona. Their songs were recorded at San Xavier, Sells, and Vomari, on the Papago Reservation in Arizona, during the spring of 1920 and the following winter. The writer desires to acknowledge the assistance of her principal interpreters, Harry Encinas of San Xavier, who was formerly a student at the United States Indian School, Carlisle, Pa., and Hugh Norris, of Sells, the official interpreter of the Indian agency. Without the interest and cooperation of these interpreters it would have been impossible to win the confidence of the Papago and make so intimate a study of their music. It was the only water for miles in a vast, sun-blasted desert where water meant survival. So Logan Cates naturally headed for Papago Wells. But he wasn’t the only one. Fleeing the fierce Churupati and his Apache warriors, other travelers had come there too. And when the Apaches found them, they began a siege as relentless and unforgiving as the barren land…and just as inescapable. The last thing Cates wanted was to be responsible for the lives of thirteen desperate strangers and a shipment of gold. But he knew that if they were to survive, he was their last chance. He also knew that some in the party were willing to die—or kill—to get their hands on the money. If he couldn’t get them to work together, it wouldn’t be the desert or even the Apaches that would do them in—it would be the greed of the very people he was trying to save.

2015 Reprint of 1936 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The Papagos or Tohono O'odham are a group of Native Americans who reside primarily in the Sonoran Desert of eastern Arizona and northwestern Mexico. "Tohono O'odham" means "Desert People." In this autobiography of one of their woman we learn how houses were built and food cooked, of war with the Papago's traditional Apache enemies, and of the purification of warriors; we are told of the importance of the young woman's first menstruation; of cactus fruit gathering, and of the brewing of cactus wine for the achievement of a culturally controlled drunken spell, among many other matters of interest.
