Paleomagnetic field analysis occupies a separate place in the variety of studied physical parameters, since it assists us in obtaining specific 'stamps' of past geomagnetic field configurations. It is well-known that life on Earth and all geological-environmental processes occur in the changing geomagnetic field (the Earth's magnetic field intensity is now decreasing). Geological-geophysical records indicate that hundreds and hundreds of Earth's magnetic field reversals have occurred. Paleomagnetic research has revealed information about ancient (from hundreds to billions years ago) magnetic field changes, which reflects definite geological, archaeological, cosmological and environmental events of that time. Some geodynamic and tectonic information derived from paleomagnetic field analysis cannot be obtained by any other geophysical or geological methods. This book reveals the current understanding of leading scientists studying paleomagnetic on new approaches and results in different regions of the world. Paleosecular variation, mineral magnetic, magnetic fabric and $\sp{14}$C studies were carried out in three lakes in Pennsylvania. In Lake Waynewood, a clear record of watershed changes over the past 3700 years BP is available. Prior to 2700 BP, little evidence of allogenic influx is present, whereas, at 2700 yrs BP, the magnetic mineralogy and the magnetic fabric suggest allogenic sources for the magnetic minerals. Between 2700 and 1900 yrs BP, major changes in mineral magnetic properties suggest an interval of instability in the watershed. Conditions were more stable between 1900 and 100 yrs BP, and at 100 yrs BP, the effects of clearcutting are apparent. Similar studies were carried out in Lakes Lacawac and Giles. In all three lakes, a sharp change in mineral magnetic properties, most notably a drop in the ferrimagnetic content of the sediments, is seen $\sim$1800-1900 yrs BP. The change in mineral magnetic properties is consistent with increased input of antiferromagnetic minerals (goethite or hematite), implying that all three lakes were responding to a regional or global climate event causing increased erosion.

Reversals in the polarity of Earth's magnetic field have long been used to provide age constraints on oceanic crust and other geologic materials. More recently, it has been recognized that shorter period variations in field intensity hold the potential for placing tighter age constraints on a variety of processes and materials. Archeological artifacts, sedimentary sections, and young volcanic flows are potential candidates for paleointensity dating. This dissertation examines two kinds of records that go into providing reference curves for such dating schemes and addresses the feasibility and applications of paleomagnetic dating, focusing on mid-ocean ridge accretionary processes. Chapter 1 is an evaluation of paleointensity data (05 ka) from archeological materials in the American Southwest and northwestern South America. New data is presented and placed in the context of existing data to examine regional variations in paleointensity. Such independently-dated regional curves are used in Chapter 4 to place age constraints on undated materials. Chapter 2 examines short-period variations in sea-surface magnetic anomalies between ̃ 1011 Ma. Such "tiny wiggles" allow for additional age constraints between field reversals. Though globally correlated, the nature of these tiny wiggles has not been conclusively tied to either short field reversals or simple intensity variations alone. In this chapter, a sedimentary record of relative paleointensity variations is compared to deep-tow marine magnetic anomalies in an attempt to resolve this issue. Chapter 3 turns to paleointensity recorded in young submarine basaltic glass (SBG) at mid-ocean ridges. The chapter examines the role cooling rate may play in influencing paleointensity estimates and uses a small set of samples from the southern East Pacific Rise as a test case for dating young flows (
