The work presented in this thesis describes the first experimental measurement of the photon asymmetry of the exclusive $ ec{γ}$ → ?0p → ?+?-p reaction. The data were gathered during the summer of 2001 as a proof of principle study using a polarized beam of photons with the CLAS detector in Hall B of Jefferson Lab for the first time. The aim of the g8a set of experiments is to improve the understanding of the underlying symmetry of the quark degrees of freedom in the nucleon, the nature of the parity exchange between the incident photon and the target nucleon, the mechanism of associated strangeness production in electromagnetic reactions, and to search for evidence for the existence of the so called missing resonances. A beam of tagged and collimated linearly polarized photons (energy range 1.8-2.2 GeV) in conjunction with the large solid angle coverage of CLAS make possible the extraction of polarization observables for the photoproduction of vector mesons. For example, the azimuthal distribution of the ?0 as a function of its polar angle in the ($ ec{γ}$p) c.m. system enables the measurement of the photon asymmetry parameter, ?. This has been measured for ?c.m. ≤ 65°, the results of which are compared with the prediction of the quark model of Zhao for the ? vector meson. It has been found that the tensor coupling for the ?0 is quite different than that of the ?. The experimental technique of using a beam of linear polarized photons with the CLAS detector has been shown to be viable. By the end of the second phase of these experiments they expect to have a high quality data set which will allow the measurement of the spin density matrix elements for the ?0 and provide evidence relating to the existence of the missing resonances.

A significant part of the experimental program in Hall-B of the Jefferson Lab is dedicated to the studies of the structure of baryons. CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS), availability of circularly and linearly polarized photon beams and recent addition of polarized targets provides remarkable opportunity for single, double and in some cases triple polarization measurements in photoproduction. An overview of the experiments will be presented.

c Societ` a Italiana di Fisica / Springer-Verlag 2008 The 11th Workshop on The Physics of Excited Nucleons, NSTAR 2007, was held at the University of Bonn, Germany,fromSeptember5–8,2007.ItwasthelatestofaseriesofsuccessfulconferencesattheRensselaerPolytechnic Institute (1988), Florida State University (1994 and 2005), Je?erson Lab (1995 and 2000), INT Seattle (1996), GWU ? Washington (1997), ECT Trento (1998), Mainz (2001), Pittsburgh (2002) and the LPSC Grenoble (2004). A Baryon Resonance Analysis Group (BRAG) meeting immediately before the workshop focused especially on the physical meaning of bare and dressed scattering matrix singularities. A focus workshop on? photoproduction rounded o? the NSTAR 2007. The goal of NSTAR 2007 was to bring together experts on all areas of physics relevant to baryon spectroscopy, both in experiment and theory. Latest results were presented in 30 plenary talks and 34 parallel contributions, the proceedings of which are collected in this volume. The workshop was attended by 123 scientists of 41 universities and laboratories from 16 countries. Exciting new high-precision data were shown from facilities in Asia, the US and Europe, e.g. BES, BNL, COSY, ELSA, GRAAL, JLab, MAMI and LEPS. Large-acceptance detectors provide complete angular distributions in many reaction channels. Particular emphasis is put on the measurement of single and double polarisation observables such that many new polarization measurements can be expected in forthcoming meetings.

A large part of the experimental program in Hall B of the Jefferson Lab is dedicated to baryon spectroscopy. Photoproduction experiments are essential part of this program. CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and availability of circularly and linearly polarized tagged photon beams provide unique conditions for this type of experiments. Recent addition of the Frozen Spin Target (FROST) gives a remarkable opportunity to measure double and triple polarization observables for different pseudo-scalar meson photoproduction processes. For the first time, a complete or nearly complete experiment becomes possible and will allow model independent extraction of the reaction amplitude. An overview of the experiment and its current status is presented.

This volume collects papers presented at the international workshop "Hadron-Nuclear Physics 09" held at Osaka, November 1619, 2009. The series of this workshop has provided opportunities to discuss common interests of hadron and nuclear physics. Hadrons and nuclei show up different layers of phenomena governed by the same dynamics dictated by the fundamental law of the strong interaction, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The basic building blocks of matter, quarks and gluons, are confined in hadrons, generating their masses dynamically and breaking chiral symmetry spontaneously. The latter is the origin of the presence of the pion which governs the essential part of the nuclear interaction. Therefore, the common key words are chiral symmetry and pions. This volume contains reports of current achievements in hadron physics including exotic multiquark states, meson production reactions and non-linear dynamics of hadrons, and those in nuclear physics clustering phenomena, exotic neutron rich nuclei and the pions in nuclei. As related subjects, applications to astronuclear physics, including accelerator physics and laser physics are also discussed comprehensively.

This is a conference that explores areas of common interest between nuclear physicists, high energy (particle) physicists, and astrophysicists. These areas range from studies of the strong interactions that bind the nuclei together, to physics of the very early Universe. They include such topics as the detailed behavior of neutrinos and searches for "new physics", that is phenomena that cannot be accounted for by our current theories.
