Dogs can be your best friends. They love you when you are happy or sad, when you are angry or frustrated. They just want your love and attention. That's all they ask, well and a bone from time to time. Having a dog is a natural thing for humans. I encourage everyone to have a four legged hairy friend because I believe they complete us. However, just to remind you, having a dog is going to change your life completely! First of all, you need to understand the most important thing is to learn to live next to each other so as to foster a happy relationship between you and your dog. I have seen many dog owners who feel miserable because of treating their dogs too well. Their dogs are usually bold and beautiful spending most of their life on a couch and demanding more attention which is never enough. Was that the life you were dreaming to have with your new dog? Are you now happy? I have also seen many dogs that live miserable lives because they are not allowed to do anything in their nature. They are not allowed to run, not allowed to bark and not even thinking about deciding anything by itself. Does that sound good for you? Does your best friend who would give you his life really deserve such treatment? Or are you sure that after this kind of treatment your dog would jeopardize his life for you? For me it always seems like a bad marriage where one side tries to please or dominate too much on another side. I believe dogs and humans friendship being side by side and both having respect for each other. There is no alpha behavior when we talk about friendship. No friend would ever demand from another one to wait until he or she has finished their food and only then give food to the other friend. No friend would tell you, you have no right to jump, run or think by yourself. That kind of relationship I would call slavery not a friendship. Owning a dog is a hug commitment, at least that's what we tell our children. Dogs have to be fed, walked, bathed, played with and also taken to the veterinarian. They require a lot of attentions but for every minute you spend with them you are rewarded by their loves and affections ten times over. Dogs can be your best friend because they tune into your emotions. There are many ways on how you can take good care of your dogs. However, you should remember that these pets have their own specific needs that you should attend to. It is best if you talk first with a veterinarian or an animal doctor before you own a dog. In this book you will find a few caring tips you need to remember.

The history, research and useful facts from my own experiences are discussed. The latest research findings are interesting and fascinating. They will help you understand your canines even better. Dog Ownership - You Will Not Regret It For those of you who never had pets growing up and still do not own a dog today, I hope you will gain an appreciation of the unconditional love of dogs towards their human partners and maybe it will convince you to consider getting a dog yourself whether it is a puppy, adult, senior or a rescue dog. I realize training our canine friends (and also their human counterparts) will add even more lifetime enjoyment. You will never regret it! A Different Perspective About Our Canines While you will find a tremendous amount of information and stories written about the enduring and powerful relationship between humans and canines which I endorse to the largest extent possible, I believe there are a couple of compelling perspectives that are not being told to the degree they should. Our Dog's Love Improves Our Own Health Because humans and canines have underlying proven facts for having a strong attachment to one another, we often don't think about the following: Due to the unconditional love of our dogs and the special bond with humans, there is strong evidence that dog ownership continues to improve our own health so there are mutual benefits to recognize Since our dogs provide us with so many benefits, I want to urge all of us to recognize this and give back even more than are already doing today. You will gain a larger appreciation of how our dog's unconditional love has improved and continues to improve our own health benefits and thus we need to more for them in return Recent Review from a Verified Purchaser "As an 8-year dog owner, I found this book to be extremely informative! It helped clear up some of the doubts I was having as an owner, which I found quite comforting. Having a dog comes with great responsibility, and this book highlights the most important parts of dog care and how to better understand your dog and its behavior. The author added personal experience to the mix, making the content easy to read and relate to. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone thinking about adopting (yes, adopt, don't shop!) a dog, or already has a dog or multiple dogs. An easy read, packed with useful information."

How We Can Save 5,000,000 Lives a Year Here is the first comprehensive review of a survival issue that touches the lives of a majority of Americans -- but hasn´t yet won as much of our active concern as it deserves. Nearly six out of ten U.S. households own at least one dog or cat. As the new century began, over l30,000,000 pets were sharing our lives. Yet every year an estimated 5,000,000 shelter orphans -- healthy, lovable young animals who would make happy and devoted pets -- are doomed to premature death simply for want of sufficient homes. What can all of us who keep and care about companion animals do to save the lives of those "surplus" dogs, cats, puppies and kittens? A great deal. But until now there´s been no single, accessible source to enlighten America´s pet-owning public on the many large and small ways we can help. This informal and inclusive guide, written by a fellow pet owner with no institutional affiliation, focuses on three prime areas in which thoughtful dog and cat lovers can make a dramatic difference: how we acquire our pets; how scrupulously we manage their birth control; and -- perhaps most important today -- how committed we are to keeping them with us for life. The American Humane Association, in reviewing THE PET SURPLUS on its Web site, said: "If you ever wondered what you could do to help animals, this book provides a clear and concise path towards making a difference. Seidman does a remarkable job of capturing the essence of humane work and offers simple solutions that pet owners -- or potential pet owners -- can follow to help alleviate the pet population problem in this country. The book also summarizes many key humane issues and may serve as a refresher for those working in the humane field. If books like this could be gotten into the right hands...more strides could be made to make the world a better place for our domestic companions." A review in the Winter 2002 issue of the ASPCA´s magazine, ANIMAL WATCH, said: "As well-researched and readable a text as you could hope to find on this subject, PET SURPLUS is also full of surprises. If there´s new stuff here for savvy dog and cat people -- and there is -- imagine how useful it will be for that friend or neighbor you´d love to enlighten. Better get two copies." A review in SPAY/USA´s Autumn 2001 newsletter by the organization´s director, Esther Mechler, said: "If they are willing to read, you can save your breath and give them Susan Seidman´s new book THE PET SURPLUS. Full of interesting information..." A review in the March-April 2002 issue of ANIMAL SHELTERING, the magazine for shelter professionals published by The Humane Society of the United States, said: "An excellent publication for the general public. Encouraging private citizens to become effective armchair activists for the sake of their own pets and the animals in shelters, the book will be an eye-opener." A review in the October 2002 issue of ANIMAL PEOPLE said: "Public policy could be based on her numbers. Her writing style is lucid, her experiences as a petkeeper for about 50 years both typical and revealing. Timing may be on her side. More of the public than ever before may at last be ready to sit down and read an entire book about pet overpopulation." Table of Contents: FOREWORD. Why and for whom this book was written. Chapter 1: SUPPLY AND DEMAND. The Sunny Side of the Picture. The Shadow Population. A Short History. Progress to Date: A Partial Solution. Where Do We Go from Here? Chapter 2: ACQUISITION. Right and Wrong Decisions. Is Now the Right Time? Which Kind of Pet Is Best for You? Why Not a Purebred? Rejects and Defects. The Feline Fancy. Breed Rescue. Where to Find the New Pet. The Shelter Option. Chapter 3: BIRTH CONTROL. An Unmistakable Trend. A Few Facts of Life. Benefits for Everyone. Excuses, Excuses. Going Public. The Feral Cat Challenge. Three Approaches. Ho
