Does Christianity have an answer for addiction? As longtime pastor Mike Quarles’s alcoholism worsened over eight years, churches and Christians referred him to treatment, 12-Step programs, therapy...nothing worked. Steve McVey, also a pastor, repeatedly dished out the same advice Mike received, with similarly poor results... ...Until, in their frustration, God led them back to basic, addiction-breaking truths of His Word. The authors explain these for readers who want to help someone or who struggle themselves, because freedom from addiction is found only when Christians fully believe what God says about their identity move beyond the 12-Step concept of inescapable “addict identity” stop harboring unforgiveness, get radically right with God, and dwell in who they are in Christ, which excludes engaging in addictive behaviors as a lifestyle Material on codependency is included, as is information on implementing recovery/support groups for those leaving addiction and starting to live in God’s glorious freedom.

Addiction and Grace offers an inspiring and hope–filled vision for those who desire to explore the mystery of who and what they really are. May examines the "processes of attachment" that lead to addiction and describes the relationship between addiction and spiritual awareness. He also details the various addictions from which we can suffer, not only to substances like alcohol and drugs, but to work, sex, performance, responsibility, and intimacy. Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist working with the chemically dependent, May emphasizes that addiction represents an attempt to assert complete control over our lives. Addiction and Grace is a compassionate and wise treatment of a topic of major concern in these most addictive of times, one that can provide a critical yet hopeful guide to a place of freedom based on contemplative spirituality.

This book depicts the lives of 11 courageous men who had formerly anguished over their sinful, addictive behaviors, which wounded many hearts and ravaged many lives. Nevertheless, they were not able to stop in their own strength. Their help came from the Gospel of Amazing Grace. Every courageous person who is willing to wholeheartedly surrender to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will experience God's gift of a new abundant life. What this means is that those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same anymore, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun! All this newness of life is from God, Who brought us back to Himself through what (Jesus) Christ did...For God made (Jesus) Christ, Who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through (Jesus) Christ. (II Corinthians 5:17, 18a, 21) How we thank God, Who gives us victory over sin and death through Jesus Christ our Lord! ... You were His enemies, separated from Him by your evil thoughts and actions, yet now He has brought you back as His friends. He has done this through His death on the cross in His own human body. As a result, He has brought you into the very presence of God and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him without a single fault. (1 Corinthians 15:57; Colossians 1:21-23) These courageous men experienced victory over addiction at America's Keswick Colony of Mercy. They continue to enjoy "The Victorious Christian Life", "The Exchanged Life" and an addiction-free lifestyle. SO COULD YOU! My name is Michael JJPDTDAM/R, D/K Byrne. I grew up in East Meadow, Long Island, New York. I was blessed with a loving mother and father, who always encouraged and exhorted me to do my best in loving God, my seven wonderful brothers (four) and sisters (three), and everyone who our Lord Jesus created. Our superhero mother modeled a Jesus Christ-like lifestyle. She consoled us during hard times and celebrated with us during the many good times. She had a blackboard and wrote something inspirational daily. She also walked us to our local library (about a mile from our home) once a week for new books. Our loving dad taught us to love the ocean beaches, swimming, and especially fishing. Both mom and dad modeled a great work-ethic. They both emphasized the importance of diligent study in school and gave us small rewards as incentives. They also showed us how to have fun around the house, on our block with 114 kids. I am most thankful for God's amazing grace which gave our parents faith. I am looking forward to seeing them both in heaven. I was inspired to write these two books on overcoming addiction through Jesus Christ because God's amazing grace enabled my father to overcome his alcohol addiction, God answered our families prayers spearheaded my mom. God also blessed mom with a thankful prince charming and us with the return of Superdad "I can do all things through Jesus Who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13).

The roots of the modern disease theory of addiction can be traced back to the archaic medical philosophies of the eighteenth century. This popular theory is based primarily on the assumption that so-called addicts are physically unable to resist the call of addictive chemicals. They are presumably stricken from birth with this unlucky condition and all but helpless in the fight against the unhealthy symptoms of the so-called disease. The problem is that contemporary addiction research shows that substance abusers are not genetically or biologically different from anyone else. In fact, a growing group of physicians and researchers contend that addicts are simply guilty of making self-destructive choices in response to the commonplace stresses of everyday life. When addicts begin to take responsibility for their calculated chemical choices, they ultimately come to view their abusive behaviors in terms of not sickness but sin. They can then learn how to achieve forgiveness of their sins and deliverance from their addictions by offering their hearts, minds, and bodies to Jesus Christ. This is a skillfully written and powerful book about addiction and recovery. Having seen the devastating effects of addiction first hand, Mr. Mason was able to use his own personal experiences to develop a one of a kind text that dispels the myths about addiction and beautifully outlines the connection between the Spirit and recovery. After 14 years of working in the field of chemical dependency, I have never found a more complete and insightful view of addiction, recovery, and spirituality. Winner of a 2018 Catholic Press Association Award: Sacraments. (Second Place). In the first book to directly integrate the Twelve Steps with the practice of Catholicism, Scott Weeman, founder and director of Catholic in Recovery, pairs his personal story with compassionate straight talk to show Catholics how to bridge the commonly felt gap between the Higher Power of twelve-step programs and the merciful God that he rediscovered in the heart of the sacraments. Weeman entered sobriety from alcohol and drugs on October 10, 2011, and he's made it his full-time ministry to help others who struggle with various types of addiction to find spiritual wholeness through Catholic in Recovery, an organization he founded and directs. In The Twelve Steps and the Sacraments, Weeman candidly tackles the struggle he and other addicts have with getting to know intimately the unnamed Higher Power of recovery. He shares stories of his compulsion to find a personal relationship with God and how his tentative steps back to the Catholic Church opened new doors of healing and brought him surprising joy as he came to know Christ in the sacraments. Catholics in recovery and those moving toward it, as well as the people who love them will recognize Weeman's story and his spiritual struggle to personally encounter God. He tells us how: Baptism helps you admit powerlessness over an unmanageable problem, face your desperate need for God, and choose to believe in and submit to God’s mercy. Reconciliation affirms and strengthens the hard work of examining your life, admitting wrongs, and making amends. The Eucharist provides ongoing sustenance and draws you to the healing power of Christ. The graces of Confirmation strengthen each person to keep moving forward and to share the good news of recovery and new life in Christ. Weeman's words are boldly challenging and brimming with compassion and through them you will discover inspiration, hope, sage advice, and refreshingly practical help.

The current success rate for addiction treatment is less than 30 percent, which means that 7 out of 10 recovering addicts are not being cured of the so-called “disease of addiction.” Why doesn’t treatment work? The answer is simple - addiction is not a disease. In fact, the mainstream mythology of “Once and addict, always and addict” falls apart upon close inspection. Therefore addictive behaviors must be evaluated within the context of not sickness but sin. Through the study of the Bible, so-called “addicts” can learn how to achieve forgiveness of their sins and deliverance from their addictions by offering their hearts, minds, and bodies to Jesus Christ. They can then be taught how to take advantage of the powerful indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit to wage war against their persistent addictive thoughts. Ultimately, this study has been designed to help substance abusers to focus their minds on God (instead of chemicals) in order to subdue their stubborn cravings for the seductive forbidden fruit of intoxication.
