Excerpt from Outlines of Psychology This book has been written primarily for the purpose of furnishing my students with a brief manual to supplement the lectures on Psychology. At the same time it aims to give the wider circle of scientific scholars who are interested in psychology, either for its own sake or for the sake of its applications, a systematic survey of the fundamentally im portant results and doctrines of modern psychology. In View of this double purpose, I have limited myself in detailing facts to that which is most important, or to the examples that serve most directly the ends of illustration, and have omitted entirely those aids to demonstration and experiment which are properly made use of in the lecture - room. The fact that I have based this treatise on the doctrines that I have come to hold as valid after long years of labor in this field, needs no Special justification. Still, I have not neglected to point out both in a general characterization (introduction and with references in detail, the chief theories that differ from the one here presented. Excerpt from An Outline of Psychology Out of this 'curiosity to know' science is born. Men look out upon the world, and see that it is full of objects which call for investigation. Inanimate nature is made to reveal her secrets; laws are discovered in the fall of the stone, the ebb and flow of water, the spread of colours in the rainbow: physics, the 'mother of the sciences, ' has arisen. The various living organisms have each their spe cial habits and their special structure, the observation of which is the starting-point Of zoology; and so on. Excerpt from Outlines for Experimental Psychology The only justification for the existence of an Outline for Experimental Psychology is to be found in its usefulness. In order to be useful, such a manual should serve several distinct purposes. It should encourage rather than inhibit the enthusiasm of the student who is beginning the study of human nature under controlled conditions; it should assist in giving such a student a general and more or less systematic View of the wide field of psycho logical inquiry; it should constitute a guide rather than an author ity; it should be detailed enough to enable the instructor to give his attention to the student rather than to the implements; with all this, it should allow sufficient freedom to avoid becoming itself the main object of investigation. The outline here presented has seemed to serve these various purposes in my own teaching. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Outlines of Psychology This little book does not pretend to be a treatise upon psychology, but an outline of principles logically arranged so that the student of psychology and of the theory of teaching may use it as a guide-book in directing his investigations upon this subject. Definitions and principles are not here extensively elucidated, but the facts of the science are plainly stated in their relation, to each other, with ample suggestions to the student who desires to make further investigations. It has been the aim of the author to incorporate the cardinal principles that underlie all empirical psychology, and to show the inseparable relationship existing between these principles and the successful practice of the teacher. As "science is knowledge properly classified," it has been the aim of the author to show the co-ordination and subordination of every topic, suggesting also the order in which each should be studied. That there is a philosophy of education is now generally admitted, though not universally. The application of universal principles to teaching is based upon such a philosophy. To aid the young teacher to discover and realize that psychology is not an isolated science, the author has appended other outlines and suggestive articies showing the application of psychological principles. Excerpt from Outlines of Psychology, With Special References to the Theory of Education: A Text-Book for Colleges While thus following the traditional lead in claim ing for psychology a place apart from the physical sciences, as the fundamental moral science, I follow the modern tendency to supplement the properly psychological study of mind by the physiological study of its nervous conditions and concomitants. Such investigation, though it cannot be a substitute for the direct observation of mental phenomena, seems to me to be a valuable addition to the science of mind, more particularly in its simpler departments (theory of sensation, fire). I hold with Lewes that since in psychology we are specially concerned with that type of mental develop ment which presents itself in members of civilised communities, we must give prominence to the educa tive influence of that elaborate social system, involving the structure of language, traditional forms of thought, &c., with which each individual comes from the first into intimate contact. Excerpt from Outlines of Psychology, an Elementary Treatise: With Some Practical Applications By the consent of the publishers of the work thus prepared, I have been able to use the material of this, my former very summary sketch of Psychology, as the core of the present elementary book. I have indeed revised such of the former discussion as I here use; and I have added a proportionately large amount of new text, and have endeavoured to give the present volume its own unity. What remains from the original sketch is, however, especially the tendency to make a number of practical applications of psychological theory at variousplaces in my discussion - a tendency which may be of service to some readers who, like myself, are fond of defining a good many of the problems of teaching, and of practical life, more or less in psychological terms, so far as they are able to do so. Otherwise, as I hope, the present work speaks for itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Outlines of Psychology, for Institute Work and Classroom Drill Quite a demand has been created for these summaries in a printed form. It has been thought best to supply this demand, and hence the issue of this compact book in a form both attractive and convenient. Schuyler's Treatise on Psychology has been taken as the basis of this work, though other books have been consulted. The Author hopes that these Outlines may awaken thought in others corresponding to the thought they have caused in himself.
