Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar is a comprehensive introduction to the syntactical analysis of classical Chinese. Focusing on the language of the high classical period, which ranges from the time of Confucius to the unification of the empire by Qin in 221, the book pays particular attention to the Mencius, the Lnyu, and, to a lesser extent, the Zuzhun texts. Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar starts with a brief historical overview and a discussion of the relation between the writing system and the phonology. This is followed by an outline of overall principles of word order and sentence structure. The next sections deal with the main sentence types nominal predicates, verbal predicates, and numberical expressions, which constitute a special type of quasiverbal predication. The final sections cover such topics as subordinate constitutents of sentences, nondeclarative sentence types, and complex sentences.

The core of this handbook for Classical Chinese grammar was wriiten by Archie Barnes, Head of the Chinese Department at Durham University (1961-1984). It was used for over 30 years by the university's Classical Chinese undergraduates. It has been significantly reworked and expanded for publication by Don Starr (Spalding Lecturer in Chinese Language and Civilisation at Durham University) and Graham Ormerod (a former Modern/Classical Chinese student). It has been complemented by new sections on Exposure, Interrogatives and Function Characters. A dictionary and index are also provided, as well as five annotated stories from Mrs Y.C. Liu's "Fifty Chinese Stories." This version uses original Chinese character texts, 'trots' (a translation of each character in context together with its pinyin transcription), comprehensive footnotes, and a full translation into English.

This supplemental volume continues the rigorous standard set forth in the main, three-volume Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader while reinforcing its linguistic lessons from carefully chosen representative works. Comprised of three parts--"Poetry," "Lyrics," and "Prose"--it presents texts, chronologically, that represent the artistic embodiment of China's Confucian and Taoist thought. Two introductions separately describe the structural and formal features of regulated verse and parallel prose; each genre is unique to Chinese literature yet both share common characteristics tempered by the Chinese language. The main text and its four supplementary volumes together represent the most comprehensive and authoritative textbook on the language, literature, philosophy, history, and religion of premodern China. Field-tested and fine-tuned for years in classroom settings by three members of the Chinese Linguistics Project at Princeton University, it is the definitive new resource for students and instructors of classical Chinese language or culture.

Chinese Medical Chinese is a highly useful work for the student or practitioner of Chinese Medicine who is acquiring the original medical language of their profession. Just as a medical student of Western medicine needs to have a grasp of Latin, it is important that the TCM student has a basic understanding of Chinese. To help with this, Chinese Medical Chinese provides invaluable information to help the student understand how the language fits in to the overall theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture. This title assumes that the student has already acquired a knowledge of how Chinese characters are composed, how they are written by hand and how they are pronounced. While the text itself can be navigated entirely in Pinyin, students should know how to use Chinese language dictionaries. The book is presented in two parts. The first describes the basic features of the literary language of Chinese medicne and its relationship to the language of the classical period and to the modern vernacular of northern China (Mandarin). The second part presents the vocabulary and terminology of Chinese Medicine as its component characters. The discussions that are organised in categories that cover Basic Theories, Diseases, Pathomechanisms and Pattern Identification, Principles and Methods of Treatmetn, Chinese Pharmaceutics and Acupuncture. This section has self-testing items to help the reader digest this esoteric information.

This book presents an analysis of Chinese grammar from a systemic functional perspective. Its main focus is the clausal grammar of Chinese, and Dr Li provides a thorough analysis of Chinese clauses according to their constituent parts. However, uniquely, the second half of the book extends this examination into an analysis of Chinese discourse and text analysis. Professor Halliday's foreword praises Eden Li's thorough analysis, and shows its relevance to the field of systemic functional linguistics in general. Systemic Functional Grammar of Chinese provides the reader with a general theoretical framework of grammar and discourse analysis from a systemic functional perspective.
