The first and largest group of topics is arranged with reference to the text-book in use, Professor Henry C. Sheldon's History of the Christian Church, five volumes, and is in effect an analysis of that work. The second group is of more general titles, calling for summary statement of chief subjects in the field of Church History. The topics in the third group introduce to more particular study of the Reformed Church in the Netherlands and of the Reformed Church in America, especially important to students in this Seminary. Excerpt from Outline of Church History IN the present edition of the outline or church Hrs tory, an effort has been made to adapt it more fully to the needs of the student, of the teacher, and of the gen eral reader, than were the former editions of the work. Some departments have been thoroughly changed. Dates, so far as they can be definitely or approximately known, have been assigned to the tables of the Church Fathers. The chapter in the first edition treating of the latest history of the Church has been canceled, and another, bringing down the history to the present year, has been substituted for it. The survey OF missions has been entirely re-written, giving the latest progress in the foreign mission fields of the Church. An Index, which was not thought necessary in the first issue of the work, has been found, by the use of the volume, to be a real want, and has been supplied in the new edition. The first summary which we give below, the General Periods of Church History, should be carefully commit ted to memory, to serve as a framework for the entire structure of Church History. The student will then have in mind a general survey of all the periods, in his torical order, with exact dates defining the general di visions. This sy, nopsis is then to be elaborated by the use of the second summary, or Topical Table; and this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Outlines of Ecclesiastical History The work is divided into four parts, each with a distinct idea running through it. Part I deals with the estab lishment OF the church through the ministry of Messiah and his apostles; Part II with the apostasy, brought about through the severe persecution to which the early saints'were subjected, the rise of false teachers, changing the ordinances of the gospel, intermingling pagan philosophy with Christian doctrine, and a transgression of the laws of God; Part III deals with the reformation, treating it, however, as a revolution instead of a reformation, since the so-called reformation by no means reestablished primitive Christianity, either in its form or essence, but it did overthrow the power of the Catholic church in the greater part of Western Europe, gave larger liberty to the people, and thus prepared the way for the great work which followed it - the introduction of the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times;? Part IV treats of the restoration, OF the gospel, in the aforesaid dispensation, through the rev elations which God gave to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Excerpt from A Brief Outline of Church History: Including the Reformed Church in the U. S There were innumerable local and provincial persecutions. Only two, under Decius Trajan (249 and Diocletian (303-311) spread over the entire empire, although it has been customary to speak of ten great persecutions. During this entire period, Christianity was an illegal and forbidden religion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Outlines of Church History, Vol. 24 By publishing my Lectures on Church History ("Grundzüge der Kirchengeschichte"), which I first delivered once a week as a public course for members of all faculties in the winter 1896-97, and afterwards, in approximately their present enlarged form, on many occasions, to theologians twice a week, I hope that I am meeting a more general demand, particularly among theologians. The need of an historical education for all who would take part in the organising of the Church hardly needs, in these days, to be pointed out. And yet how many succumb to the task of working their way through a forest of facts and problems; how often is disgust the only result, in the case even of gifted students and clergymen! Non-theologians easily underestimate the magnitude of the work required of theologians alone in the field of Church History, when they have not only to survey a development of two millenniums and of a rich and delicate ramification extending into every sphere of thought and life, but also to penetrate it and submit it to their criticism. Excerpt from Church History The Christian church is founded as the depository of revealed truth, and in it is the substance of the Divine revelation. St. Paul declares it to be the body of Christ, consisting of many members - the organ of the Divine life and manifestation (eph. I: 22, 23; iv; It is indwelt of God, the habitation of God through the Spirit. Therefore God is immanent in all its parts. Through it men are to find acquaintance with God; and through it He is to reveal and dispense himself to men. Excerpt from Text-Book of Church History, Vol. 1: To the Reformation In addition to the above, several hundred minor corrections were made, in large part merely of typographical errors, errors of dates, names and references, and in part, though in small part, corrections aiming to modify Germanized forms of expression. It will, however, be readily observed that to completely expurgate the foreign idioms would involve a greater number of changes than the limits of the present task permit. Excerpt from The Church and the Empire: Being an Outline of the History of the Church, From A. D. 1003 to A. D. 1304 I have tried to avoid overloading my pages with details of political history; but in no period is it so easy to miss the whole lesson of events by an attempt to isolate the special influences which affected the organised society of the Church. The interpretation which I have adopted of the important events at Canossa is not, of course, universally accepted; but the fact that it has seldom found expression in any English work may serve as my excuse.
