Excerpt from My Life Out of Prison August first, nineteen hundred and eleven! To you that probably conveys nothing; to me it is a never-to-be-forgotten day, the marking of an epoch in my life - a life up to that time brimful of tragic experience and vivid impressions. Since that time my life has been equally vivid, if not tragic, though in a different way. It was on that date, after spending ten years behind stultifying steel bars and stolid stone walls, ten years in stripes and in the midst of degradation, that I was paroled from San Quentin prison. To-day this prison is the domicile of the broken-spirited ex-political boss of San Francisco, the lifelong habitat of hundreds of hopeless men and women, the living grave of nearly 2000 human beings, each of whom is a cog in the ponderous, grinding wheel of human progress, for no man nor woman suffering a ruptured life in a prison cell is a less important unit in the evolution of humanity than is the money king, the man with the hoe or the minister of the gospel. No human being has yet lived and no human being now lives who has not or does not serve an important purpose in the great scheme of things. The fact that each human being comes into the world with latent propensities, certain temperamental characteristics and well-defined likes and dislikes has always been a source of speculation for me. I believe that every thought of every human being is of immense value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Silent Gate: A Voyage Into Prison Of course mistakes were made, but Official mis takes are bad to rectify in prison; and the man who was accused, rightly or wrongly, of talking in Church generally got the worst of it. In some cases it was a moderately safe charge to lay, and most warders had a fixed idea that you couldn't go wrong with Benjamin Cudd. Cudd was talking in church again; if he wasn't talking, he had just left oe; if he hadn't just left off, he was just going to begin: put him down for report. So, when Cudd was brought up, as usual, on Monday morning, the governor, as usual, was nasty to him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from In Prison Political prisoners have often been torch-bearers who carried the light of truth into dark places and illuminated the hidden things of the existing social order. The old slave-masters chopped off the heads of political offenders, the feudal lords boiled them in oil, kings and emperors ex iled them, and the older capitalist governments of Europe sent them to prison. A man confesses to a crime, later denies it, but is sentenced to death on circumstantial evidence. Another man appears, confesses to the same crime, but is acquitted despite his confession. During the appeal trial, however, evidence was adduced which confirmed Ishii's confession to its minutest detail, and he was sentenced to death. As he says himself in this writing, he was thus able to make some amends for his sins and at the same time to save an innocent man from death.
