Excerpt from Our Unitarian Gospel Through the lack of having made themselves familiar with the matter, there is a common and, I think, a widespread impression among people generally that Unitarianism is a new-fangled notion, a modern fad, a belief held only by a few, who are one side of the main currents of religious life and advance. Even if it were new, even if it were confined to the modern world, this would not necessarily be anything against it. The Copernican theory of the universe is new, is modern. So are most of the great discoveries that characterize and glorify the present age. But in the case of Unitarianism this cannot be said. It is not new: it is very old. And, before I come to discuss and outline a few of its great principles, it seems to me well that we should get in our minds a background of historic thought, that we may see a little what are the sources and origins of this Unitarianism, and may understand why it is that there is a new and modern birth of it in the modern world. All races start very far away from any Monotheistic or Unitarian belief. The Hebrews are no exception to that rule. The early part of the Bible shows very plain traces of the fact that the Jews were polytheists and nature-worshippers. The great teachings of science respect ing the unity of energy, the unity of life, the unity of humanity, are confirmations of that early conviction. Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Excerpt from The Unitarian Advocate, Vol. 1 Happily for the Unitarian, his peculiar views Of Christ ianity do not forbid, but require him to manifest the kindest regard for other denominations, and leave him at full liberty to do justice to piety wherever it is found, and however associated with erroneous opinions. Some who stand Opposed to us in creed have seen fit to brand us with harsh epithets for our creed's sake, and to class Unitarians with Pagans, Mahometans, Deists, the enemies Of the gospel. They strike at what is most dear to us, our christian name, and disavow, not only all our preten sions to a correct faith, (which is very tolerable) but even the most sincere claims to a pious character, which to an honest man who is conscious that he fears God from the heart, must be hard to be borne. Let not the Unitarian retaliate in kind. Let us be scrupulous, in our judgments of their character, not to overlook any fair proofs of goodness, nor too eagerly to catch at any signs of what is evil. We have no ends to answer by-auch retorts as a hasty temper might cause an injured party to resort to. Let us the more cautiously guard against these, as they would, more than any thing else, hinder the success Of every effort to convince our brethren of their fault in thus dealing with ourselves. The truths we bold are fast prevailing by their own light and power. God forbid we should employ other means than those which the spirit Of our holy master warrants, to advance them. The Old Testament was written for us, but not to us. Inviting us to leave our modern Christian preconceptions behind, John Walton contends that we will only grasp the Old Testament’s theology when we are immersed in its Ancient Near Eastern context, being guided by what the ancient authors intended as they wrote within their cognitive environment.

Excerpt from Reasons Why I Am an Unitarian: In a Series of Letters to a Friend Unitarian ministers throughout the land, and especially in our large city populations. If these opportunities are wiselypro fited by, a large reward may be expected from the hand of the heavenlv Father. The needful wisdom involves, it is sub mitted, two things - first, a going-forth to the people; and second, an offer of the Gospel, and nothing but the Gospel, both positively and distinctively. There must be'a going-foi'th. Pulpit ministrations no longer suffice. The Chiistian minister must become a missionary. Like his professed Master, he must go about doing good. In going forth into social life, he may act in various ways for the improvement of his fellow men but he must not fail to preach to them the unsearch able riches of Christ. In order that those riches may be clearly seen, intelligently apprehended, and duly valued, they must be set forth distinctively. But this positive and distino tive teaching can have little effect, unless it proceed from a heart deeply sensible of its value, and be emphatically directed so as to promote the great aim of the Gospel in the renewal as well as enrichment of the life. No propagandism can be truly Christian, or perform a Christian work, which springs not from the life of God in the soul of man, and aims not to form individuals anew after the image of the Saviour. Nothing short of this deserves the name of Christian endea vour; nothing short of this can be expected to secure the cooperation of God's Spirifiand to receive the Divine blessing.
