Sooner or later we all come to ponder our roots. Who were our ancestors, where did they come from, and what were their lives like? This book is an endeavor to pass along some of the things I have learned about our Pearson family. Many books have been written about the Pearsons, but only a few touched on our line of the family.

“Pearson delivers a poignant debut that explores the faith of one African American family. . . . The writing is strong, and the story is engaging, and readers will be pleased to discover a new voice in Southern inspirational fiction.” —Booklist Christy Award winner! To hear Beatrice Agnew tell it, she entered the world with her mouth tightly shut. Just because she finds out she’s dying doesn’t mean she can’t keep it that way. If any of her children have questions about their daddy and the choices she made after he abandoned them, they’d best take it up with Jesus. There’s no room in Granny B’s house for regrets or hand-holding. Or so she thinks. Her granddaughter, Evelyn Lester, shows up on Beatrice’s doorstep anyway, burdened with her own secret baggage. Determined to help her Granny B mend fences with her far-flung brood, Evelyn turns her grandmother’s heart and home inside out. Evelyn’s meddling uncovers a tucked-away box of old letters, forcing the two women to wrestle with their past and present pain as they confront the truth Beatrice has worked a lifetime to hide.

The author compiled this family history using her own research and that of many near and distant cousins who shared their findings. The ancestors of her grandfather Clinton were participants in the founding of what would one day be these United States. Most of them came from England, and were the settlers and founders of Rhode Island Colony, Massachusetts Bay Colony, Nantucket Island, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Ancestors included Quaker ministers, and people who were jailed, fined, beaten, whipped and persecuted simply because of their religious beliefs. The Quaker poet John Greenleaf Whitter wrote a poem expressing the experience of one young relative sitting in prison, waiting to be put on the slave auction block.Other ancestors were veterans of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. One was a Member of Parliament in England. Three arrived on the Mayflower. Some family lines are traced back up to 20 generations. One man was banished from town because he kissed his wife on the Sabbath. The Pellett family was able to keep their heads but had associates who did not, being executed for High Treason. Our ancestors came from all walks of life. Most could read and write; many owned books, and held esteemed positions in their communities. They were physicians, merchants, constables, blacksmiths and carpenters, coal miners, weavers and spinners. Many were land owners, gentlemen, planters and farmers. They erected glassworks and saw mills and operated ferries and taverns. Some represented their colony at the General Assembly. At least three are said to be of the Boston Brahmin. Included among some of the cousins are U.S. Presidents, vice presidents, a British Prime Minister, a few famous Generals, notable abolitionists, writers, poets, philosophers, abolitionists, actors and actresses, singers, an aviatrix, and the Duchess of Sussex. The ten page chapter on The Genetic Evidence explains the results obtained via Autosomal, Mitochondrial and Y-DNA testing at Family Tree DNA and Ancestry. Indexed and illustrated, with 93 family surname chapters and a 38 page Bibliography, the book should be useful to family researchers and genealogists who are related to these and allied families.

It's easy to start, teach, and franchise a creative genealogy writing club, class, or publication. Start by looking at the descriptions of each business and outline a plan for how your group operates. Flesh out each category with your additional research pertaining to your local area and your resources. Your goal always is to solve problems and get measurable results or find accurate records and resources. Or research personal history and DNA-driven genealogy interpretation reporting. You can make keepsake albums/scrapbooks, put video online or on disc, and create multimedia text and image with sound productions or work with researching records in archives, oral history, or living legacies and time capsules. A living legacy is a celebration of life as it is now. A time capsule contains projects and products, items, records, and research you want given to future generations such as genograms of medical record family history, family newsletters, or genealogy documents, diaries, photos, and video transcribed as text or oral history for future generations without current technology to play the video discs. Or start and plan a family and/or school reunion project or franchise, business or event. Another alternative is the genealogy-related play or skit, life story, or memoir.
