NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • GOOD MORNING AMERICA BUZZ PICK • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, Financial Times, The Washington Post, Time, Los Angeles Times, New York Post, Town & Country, Good Housekeeping, Kirkus Reviews “A perfect novel for these times and all times, the single textual artifact from the pandemic era I would place in a time capsule as a representation of all that is good and true and beautiful about literature.”—Molly Young, The New York Times (Editors’ Choice) Eight friends, one country house, and six months in isolation—a novel about love, friendship, family, and betrayal hailed as a “virtuoso performance” (USA Today) and “an homage to Chekhov with four romances and a finale that will break your heart” (The Washington Post) In the rolling hills of upstate New York, a group of friends and friends-of-friends gathers in a country house to wait out the pandemic. Over the next six months, new friendships and romances will take hold, while old betrayals will emerge, forcing each character to reevaluate whom they love and what matters most. The unlikely cast of characters includes a Russian-born novelist; his Russian-born psychiatrist wife; their precocious child obsessed with K-pop; a struggling Indian American writer; a wildly successful Korean American app developer; a global dandy with three passports; a Southern flamethrower of an essayist; and a movie star, the Actor, whose arrival upsets the equilibrium of this chosen family. Both elegiac and very, very funny, Our Country Friends is the most ambitious book yet by the author of the beloved bestseller Super Sad True Love Story.

Excerpt from Our Country's Readers, Vol. 1 The lessons are, as nearly as could be given, actual lessons used in the school-room. An effort has been made to give lessons that are full of life and of interest to children, and at the same time to use all words introduced often enough to fully establish them in the child's Visual and written vocabularies. It is hoped that the lessons will be suggestive of the possibilities of arousing the mental activities of the child through those things which delight his heart. The reading lessons are drawn largely from directed play, by which means the question of ex pression in reading is solved. Excerpt from Our Country's Readers, Vol. 2 AN attempt is made in this, the Second Book of our country's readers, to present material that is interesting to the child. The mere process of get ting thought from the printed page is task enough to tax his powers to the utmost; if we add to the great difficulties of this process, tasks for study in history, science, and the arts, he goes to his reading with aversion. On the other hand, in the world of the imagination and the emotions, he is very much at home. Trailing clouds of glory do we come, as Wordsworth has it. If: we give him sufficient material from this. Magic world of the imagination, he will brave the difficulties of the technical process cheerfully and successfully. Fortunately, this old, gray world of ours has a great storehouse of litera ture simple enough in conception, buoyant enough in spirit, and warm enough in color to fascinate the child. The work of the editor of such a primary book as this, is to make a proper selection from this storehouse and to present it in language simple enough for the child at this stage of his develop ment in the art of reading. Excerpt from Our Country's Readers, Vol. 5 The Readers of this series have at least one important distinction: they are composed almost entirely of selections from our own authors. Of the thirty-four pieces in this reader, thirty-two are from American writers. One selec tion is from The Pilgrim's Progress and one is from the Bible. The proportion of foreign and of native literature in American readers has been usually just the reverse of this, giving the great part to foreign writers and a small part to our own writers. And the native selections included have most often been those on which the copyright had expired or that had never been copyrighted. Quite a different plan has been followed here. The first design has been to present our own authors. The ground of choice has been solely one of fitness. Each selection from our native authors has been made on the ground of its representative nature, or of its special application to phases of our own home life. The result is the embodiment of an expensive collection of copyrighted material; but we be lieve the character of this material justifies the expense and labor incurred. In view of the fact that the selections are from Americanauthors, about American subjects, for American youths, it seemed appropriate to call the series Our Country's Readers. The selections presented are from the latest authorized readings, and correspond to the author's approved editions. The grading has been made with the utmost care, both from principle and theory and from actual tests with pupils.
