Otherworld Uprising is the first major monograph for Toronto-based Shary Boyle, who is becoming known for her uncanny and exquisite porcelain figurines that skillfully subvert the historical expectations inherent to this traditional material. Boyle's multifaceted practice also includes figurative drawing, painting and performances that give voice to the under-represented--children, animals and women--while also taking on aspects of the spiritual and the metaphysical. Through dream-like references to mythology and fairytales, her imagery illustrates female desire from a female point of view. Boyle is also known for her multi-layered audio-visual performances, during which she does live drawings on an overhead projector. Many of these have been incorporated into shows by musicians such as Feist, Peaches, Christine Fellows and Will Oldham. This volume contains new stories by novelist Sheila Heti, illustrated by Boyle, as well as texts by the Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada, Josée Drouin-Brisebois, and Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Ben Portis.

Ken Post examines the 'turn to the East' by the international communist movement in fostering world revolution after the success in Russia in 1917, which led to communism's greatest gains after the Second World War. Based on a theorisation of the building of revolutionary movements, this study critically assesses communist strategy and tactics using three key cases, China, India and Brazil, drawing out implications for possible future developments in less-developed countries.

The Zapatistas of Chiapas, Mexico, have often been portrayed in reductive, polarized terms; either as saintly activists or dangerous rebels. Cultural anthropologists Duncan Earle and Jeanne Simonelli, drawing on decades-long relationships and fieldwork, attained a collegiality with the Zapatistas that reveals a more complex portrait of a people struggling with self-determination on every level. Seeking a new kind of experimental ethnography, Earle & Simonelli have chronicled a social experiment characterized by resistance, autonomy and communality. Combining their own compelling narrative as participant-observers, and those of their Chiapas compadres, the authors effectively call for an activist approach to research. The result is a unique ethnography that is at once analytical and deeply personal. Uprising of Hope will be compelling reading for scholars and general readers of anthropology, social justice, ethnography, Latin American history and ethnic studies.

Which is weird because she's never minded being on her own before. (She wasn't exactly popular.) But there was something about Trow. An erotically charged, addictive thriller from the future queen of suspense. Living in Toronto for a year, Elena is leading the normal life she has always dreamed of, including a stable job as a journalist and a nice apartment shared with her boyfriend. As the lone female werewolf in existence, only her secret midnight prowls and her occasional inhuman cravings set her apart. Just one year ago, life was very different. Adopted by the Pack when bitten, Elena had spent years struggling with her resentment at having her life stolen away. Torn between two worlds, and overwhelmed by the new passions coursing through her body, her only option for control was to deny her awakening needs and escape. But now the Pack has called Elena home to help them fight an alliance of renegade werewolves who are bent on exposing and annihilating the Pack. And although Elena is obliged to rejoin her "family," she vows not to be swept up in Pack life again, no matter how natural it might feel. She has made her choice. Trouble is, she's increasingly uncertain if it's the right one. An erotically charged thriller, Bitten will awaken the voracious appetite of every reader, as the age-old battle between man and beast, between human and inhuman forces, comes to a head in one small town and within one woman's body.
