"Patience, mercy, peacemaking, simplicity, humility. When we cultivate these qualities our life will become immensely rich. Beneath all our layers of ignorance, we can uncover our essential nature: our Original Goodness. According to the ""Perennial Philosophy"" found in all religions, this divine essence can be realized, and is the supreme goal in life. This unbroken awareness of the presence of God in all creatures is the mark of the mystic. For one who grasps these principles with an open heart, life takes fire with purpose."

When confronted by horrendous evil, even the most pious believer may question not only life's worth but also God's power and goodness. A distinguished philosopher and a practicing minister, Marilyn McCord Adams has written a highly original work on a fundamental dilemma of Christian thought—how to reconcile faith in God with the evils that afflict human beings. Adams argues that much of the discussion in analytic philosophy of religion over the last forty years has offered too narrow an understanding of the problem. The ground rules accepted for the discussion have usually led philosophers to avert their gaze from the worst—horrendous—evils and their devastating impact on human lives. They have agreed to debate the issue on the basis of religion-neutral values, and have focused on morals, an approach that—Adams claims—is inadequate for formulating and solving the problem of horrendous evils. She emphasizes instead the fruitfulness of other evaluative categories such as purity and defilement, honor and shame, and aesthetics. If redirected, philosophical reflection on evil can, Adams's book demonstrates, provide a valuable approach not only to theories of God and evil but also to pastoral care.

Will all evil finally turn to good, or does some evil remain stubbornly opposed to God and God's goodness? Will even the devil be redeemed? Addressing a theological issue of perennial interest, this comprehensive book (in two volumes) surveys the history of Christian universalism from the second to the twenty-first century and offers an interpretation of how and why universalist belief arose. The author explores what the church has taught about universal salvation and hell and critiques universalism from a biblical, philosophical, and theological standpoint. He shows that the effort to extend grace to everyone undermines the principle of grace for anyone.

If God does not exist, then what does? Is there good and evil, and should we care? How do we know what’s true anyway? And can we make any sense of this universe, or our own lives? Sense and Goodness answers all these questions in lavish detail, without complex jargon. A complete worldview is presented and defended, covering every subject from knowledge to art, from metaphysics to morality, from theology to politics. Topics include free will, the nature of the universe, the meaning of life, and much more, arguing from scientific evidence that there is only a physical, natural world without gods or spirits, but that we can still live a life of love, meaning, and joy.

Of the worlds major religions, only Christianity holds to a doctrine of original sin. Ideas are powerful, and they shape who we are and who we become. The fact that many Christians believe there is something in human nature that is, and will always be, contrary to God, is not just a problem but a tragedy. So why do the doctrines assumptions of human nature so infiltrate our pulpits, sermons, and theological bookshelves? How is it so misconstrued in times of grief, pastoral care, and personal shame? How did we fall so far from Gods original blessing in the garden to this pervasive belief in humanitys innate inability to do good? In this book, Danielle Shroyer takes readers through an overview of the historical development of the doctrine, pointing out important missteps and overcalculations, and providing alternative ways to approach often-used Scriptures. Throughout, she brings the primary claims of original sin to their untenable (and unbiblical) conclusions. In Original Blessing, she shows not only how we got this doctrine wrong, but how we can put sin back in its rightful place: in a broader context of redemption and the blessing of humanitys creation in the image of God.

First Published in 2004. God and Goodness takes the experience of value as a starting point for natural theology. Mark Wynn argues that theism offers our best understanding of the goodness of the world, especially its beauty and openness to the development of richer and more complex material forms. We also see that the world's goodness calls for a moral response: commitment to the goodness of the world represents a natural extension of the trust to which we aspire in our dealings with human beings. Wynn argues that the goodness of the world provides a glimpse into what we should mean by 'God'. Here, he seeks to recover the mediaeval sense that the goodness of the world offers an image of the goodness of God, not simply in relation to the world, but in itself. This book will be an invaluable read for those interested in natural theology and philosophy of religion.

Most contemporary versions of moral realism are beset with difficulties. Many of these difficulties arise because of a faulty conception of the nature of goodness. Goodness, God, and Evil lays out and defends a new version of moral realism that re-conceives the nature of goodness. Alexander argues that the adjective 'good' is best thought of as an attributive adjective and not as a predicative one. In other words, the adjective 'good' logically cannot be detached from the noun (or noun phrase) that it modifies. It is further argued that this conception of the function of the adjective implies that recent attempts to provide necessary a posteriori identities between goodness and something else must fail. The convertibility of being and goodness, the privation theory of evil, a denial of the fact-value distinction, human nature as the ground of human morality and even a novel argument for the existence of God are some of the implications of the account of goodness that Alexander offers.

If everything in our lives we knew to be good was gone, would we still say God is good? What if his goodness is grounded in something more than our experiences? What if that goodness actually runs so deep that it can never be erased from our souls...the very place we need to believe it most? Maybe God's goodness isn't about a set of events after all. Maybe his goodness is how he takes every event and molds us and changes us into something beautiful- even when the very thing we've experienced is anything but. Whether you know it or not, you've probably heard a part of Maria's story. News articles and T.V. screens nationwide were plastered with, "Plane from Indiana crashes in Michigan, two killed." In Oh, Goodness, Maria will take you with her as she reflects back on discovering the true goodness of God in a way that is authentic, honest, and raw. Maria connects us with the many facets of her own humanity as we join her on a journey where she asks a very simple yet profound question. "God, if you are good then why..." In this book, Maria doesn't tolerate a cookie cutter answer to such a question. If we don't believe God is good in all circumstances, then why on earth would we ever be a Christian? At some point, life is hard and painful. It's in that season we learn just where our faith lies. If God is really good then why... From the Author: This Bible study was written as a follow up to my book, "oh, goodness". The book was written with the purpose of getting you curious about discovering God's goodness in your own life. This Bible study, however, is written with the purpose of equipping you to tell of it after you discover it. How awesome would it be if every one of you wrote your own story of God's goodness? I am not ashamed to say that my prayer continues to be that we won't just know but have faith that God is good. I spent seven years writhing in grief, pain, loss, and anxiety all stemming from this question, "How can this be good?!" I heard people try to encourage me with words, trying to convince me terrible tragedy was a part of God's plan and therefore good. I was confused, alone, and felt hopeless. It was in that place God began to teach me, through his word, about his goodness. What I found was something different than what others had tried to describe. I am sharing my journey with you because I believe sharing is what God calls us to do. We are going to read his word, meditate on his word, and consider his word through this study. The discovering of one's story often requires a journey back to remember and reflect, and the study is set up that way- as a journey. You will notice I use language that suggests we are on an actual journey because I don't want you to miss that our relationship with Jesus is more like a journey than a formula. I am praying for you as you prepare to take a journey that will set you free in Christ: discovering God's goodness when life isn't good.to your freedom, Maria Hatch - Bowersockp.s.
