The Second World War era Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was the forerunner of today's CIA. During the war the organisation planned and executed thousands of covert operations behind enemy lines from North Africa to Europe to Asia. This publication reproduces the famous OSS' 1944 "Operational Groups" Field Manual. OSS Operational Groups were made up of foreign language-speaking operatives trained to operate as special forces units in occupied territory. Operational Groups organized resistance groups, trained them, organized supply drops of weapons and ordnance, then led them in attacks against enemy targets. The OSS Operational Groups Field Manual describes the selection, training and operational employment of Operational Group personnel. Classified "Secret" in its day, this manual was only fully declassified in the past few years. This is near-perfect reproduction of the original publication with all wartime classification markings intact. With the originals all but extinct outside the US National Archives' OSS collection, this series is a must-have for any military scholar or for special operations or intelligence community personnel wishing to honor their heritage. The titles available in this series include: Special Operations Field Manual Operational Groups Field Manual Simple Sabotage Field Manual Secret Intelligence Field Manual Morale Operations Field Manual Maritime Unit Field Manual

This Simple Sabotage Field Manual, a genuine guide from the Second World War, states that its purpose is to "characterize simple sabotage, to outline its possible effects, and to present suggestions for inciting and executing it." Among the other fine pieces of advice in this handy volume, one is encouraged to "switch address labels on enemy baggage", "let cutting tools grow dull", "forget to provide paper in toilets", and "change sign posts at intersections and forks; the enemy will go the wrong way and it may be miles before he discovers his mistakes."

The Army believes that the U.S. will continue to be engaged in an era of ¿persistent conflict¿ -- a period of protracted confrontation among states, non-state, and individual actors increasingly willing to use violence to achieve their political and ideological ends. This manual is a revolutionary departure from past doctrine. Commanders will employ offensive, defensive, and civil support operations simultaneously as part of an interdependent joint force to seize, retain, and exploit the initiative, accepting prudent risk to create opportunities to achieve decisive results. This ed. will take us into the 21st century urban battlefields among the people without losing our capabilities to dominate the higher conventional end of the spectrum of conflict.
