The overall objective of this dissertation was to examine the developmental effects of the somatotropin/insulin-like growth factor axis on protein and lipid metabolism and how this axis can be modulated by nutrition in growing pigs. The administration of exogenous porcine somatotropin (pST) did not affect growth performance $(P> .10), $ but did increase accretion rates of protein $(P .10)$ were found in circulating IGFBP-3 or IGFBP-2 concentrations. However, circulating concentrations of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were increased $(P .10)$ in vitro glucose uptake and utilization by adipose tissue explants or the glucose response $(P> .10)$ to an insulin challenge. The nutritional regulation of the IGF system was examined by feeding pigs diets that ranged from low to high protein concentration in relation to their requirements. Protein restriction only minimally reduced $(P = .11)$ circulating IGF-I concentrations and did not affect circulating IGFBP $(P> .10).$ The pST challenge increased $(P .10)$ the IGFBP response to the pST challenge. The results presented here demonstrate that the pST regulation of growth is age-dependent and the age effects appear to be similar between different tissues. Also, only severe protein restriction alters circulating levels of components of the IGF system.

Animal biotechnology is a broad umbrella encompassing the polarities of fundamental and applied research including molecular modelling, molecular and quantitative genetics, gene manipulation, development of diagnostics and vaccines and manipulation of tissue or digestion metabolism by growth promoters. Although animal biotechnology in the broadest sense is not new, what is new is the level of complexity and precision involved in scientists' current ability to manipulate living organisms. This new book sets out to show that the important ideas in animal biotechnology are exciting and relevant to everyday experience. It represents an important update of the literature for research workers, lecturers, and advisers in animal science, but is also a core text for advanced undergraduate courses in animal science and biotechnology. It will be an essential acquisition for librarians in agriculture and veterinary science.

The book is intended to provide in-depth reviews of the recent advances in major areas of metabolism in growing domestic animals. The study of metabolism represents a nexus of biological phenomenon that integrates the impact of nutrition, physiology, endocrinology, immunology, biochemistry, and cell biology in an organism. The development of new methodological techniques and experimental approaches have provide scientists with a greater understanding of how key nutrients or substrates are metabolized at the cellular, organ, and whole animal level. This book presents contributions from leading scientists in nutrition and physiology that highlight important new developments in interorgan and tissue-specific metabolism of protein and amino acids, lipids and fatty acids, and carbohydrates in monogastric and runinant species. Authors will describe the impact of specific biochemical pathways and expression of critical enzymes, routes of nutrient or substrate input, and anatomical or structural influences on the rates of metabolism in a given tissue or cell type. Major substrates/ fuels for oxidative metabolism, key signaling pathways, and intracellular molecules that regulate the major metabolic processes will be described. Also included is how the metabolism of growing animals is influenced by ontogeny, stage of differentiation, and major changes in diet, or the environment. The concepts and specific findings in each area are discussed in the context of their impact on the nutrient requirements, growth, environmental impact, healt and well-being of animals. The book will be a useful reference for research scientists, teachers and students interested in and advanced understanding of metabolism in growing animals. The book is written by leading experts and highlights some of the most recent advances in the field of metabolism. It is a useful reference for researchers and advanced level graduate students in nutrition, physiology and animal science. Presents recent advances in the field of metabolism.

Evidence generated by a number of genetic studies indicates that growth is regulated by a number of genes and that interference with their expression can have catastrophic effects on the well being of the whole organism. This work covers skeletal development and growth.
