This book explores the theory of strongly continuous one-parameter semigroups of linear operators. A special feature of the text is an unusually wide range of applications such as to ordinary and partial differential operators, to delay and Volterra equations, and to control theory. Also, the book places an emphasis on philosophical motivation and the historical background.

The theory of semigroups of operators was initiated by E. Hille in his monograph Functional Analysis and Semigroups'' which appeared in 1948. In the years thereafter the theory was developed further by W. Feller, T. Kato, R.S. Phillips, K. Yosida and many others. The possible range of applications is enormous and includes problems in mathematical physics, probability theory and control theory. The purpose of this book is to illustrate the richness of the theory of one-parameter semigroups by examining some of its various aspects. It is written in such a way that all three parts can be read more or less independently; it is assumed that the reader is familiar with some of the basic principles of functional analysis.

Nonlinear semigroup theory is not only of intrinsic interest, but is also important in the study of evolution problems. In the last forty years, the generation theory of flows of holomorphic mappings has been of great interest in the theory of Markov stochastic branching processes, the theory of composition operators, control theory, and optimization. It transpires that the asymptotic behavior of solutions to evolution equations is applicable to the study of the geometry of certain domains in complex spaces. Readers are provided with a systematic overview of many results concerning both nonlinear semigroups in metric and Banach spaces and the fixed point theory of mappings, which are nonexpansive with respect to hyperbolic metrics (in particular, holomorphic self-mappings of domains in Banach spaces). The exposition is organized in a readable and intuitive manner, presenting basic functional and complex analysis as well as very recent developments. Contents: Mappings in Metric and Normed Spaces; Differentiable and Holomorphic Mappings in Banach Spaces; Hyperbolic Metrics on Domains in Complex Banach Spaces; Some Fixed Point Principles; The DenjoyOCoWolff Fixed Point Theory; Generation Theory for One-Parameter Semigroups; Flow-Invariance Conditions; Stationary Points of Continuous Semigroups; Asymptotic Behavior of Continuous Flows; Geometry of Domains in Banach Spaces."

This wide ranging but self-contained account of the spectral theory of non-self-adjoint linear operators is ideal for postgraduate students and researchers, and contains many illustrative examples and exercises. Fredholm theory, Hilbert-Schmidt and trace class operators are discussed, as are one-parameter semigroups and perturbations of their generators. Two chapters are devoted to using these tools to analyze Markov semigroups. The text also provides a thorough account of the new theory of pseudospectra, and presents the recent analysis by the author and Barry Simon of the form of the pseudospectra at the boundary of the numerical range. This was a key ingredient in the determination of properties of the zeros of certain orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. Finally, two methods, both very recent, for obtaining bounds on the eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint Schrodinger operators are described. The text concludes with a description of the surprising spectral properties of the non-self-adjoint harmonic oscillator.

In this book, non-spectral methods are presented and discussed that have been developed over the last two decades for the investigation of asymptotic behavior of operator semigroups. This concerns in particular Markov semigroups in L1-spaces, motivated by applications to probability theory and dynamical systems. Related results, historical notes, exercises, and open problems accompany each chapter.
