Lying in a Hong Kong dockyard, the HMS Wagtail awaits her last summons to the breakers' yard. Commander Justin Rolfe is also seemingly at the end of his useful naval life, an embittered man, brooding and angry from a court-martial verdict. Then, the offshore island of Santu is threatened with invasion from the Chinese mainland. The small British community must be brought out, and Commander Rolfe and the Wagtail are ordered to the island. The job is regarded with sullen resentment by his crew, but to Rolfe, and even the ship, it is a job that offers the chance of a reprieve and a restoration of self-respect. ______________________________ A thrilling tale of naval warfare from Douglas Reeman, the all-time bestselling master of naval fiction, who served with the Royal Navy on convoy duty in the Atlantic, the Arctic and the North Sea. He has written dozens of naval books under his own name and the pseudonym Alexander Kent, including the famous Richard Bolitho books set during the Napoleonic Wars.

Detective Damian McQuaid, of New York’s First Homicide Squad, decides to help a woman who has been receiving obscene phone calls. Such petty squeals are none of McQuaid’s business, but when, as he leaves for the day, he overhears an attractive woman talking to a precinct detective, he volunteers to help her. Unofficially, of course: he knows just what interpretation his buddies in homicide would put on that if they find out. Because she is terrified of being alone, he spends the night on Iris’s sofa, but when he wakes the next morning, he finds that she has been murdered in her bedroom while he slept. Shocked and angry, he decides to investigate on his own time—again, very unofficially; again, for very obvious reasons—and his inquiries lead him to begin a clever, insidious, and dangerous program of harassment in an effort to expose the man McQuaid believes to be the killer. All very unofficially, because McQuaid doesn’t have a single clue that would convict his suspect.

In 1905, the year preceding the Iranian Constitutional Revolution, Iranian women and girls were sold by needy peasants to pay their taxes, or taken as booty in a raid by Turkoman tribesmen against a village settlement in Northeast Iran. The telling and retelling of the event became a focus for outage and grievance, contributing to both popular mobilizations against autocracy and a constitutional regime. Indeed, the narration of this event took all of Iran by storm. Shortly after the opening of a new parliament in 1906, relatives of some of the captive women demanded that the parliament punish those responsible. The newly reconstituted Ministry of Justice investigated the matter and actually tried several people who were alleged to be responsible. In The Story of the Daughters of Quchan, Afsaneh Najambodi investigates what made this incident more powerful. How did a familiar incident of rural destitution and the story of yet another Turkoman raid became a uniquely outrageous story? Although it captured the Iranian national imagination, this event has been all but forgotten. What does this "amnesia" tell us about the political culture or modern Iran, as well as that country's national memory, and about modernist historiography, as well as that country's national memory, and about modernist historiography in general?
