Bringing to life the joys and difficulties of mathematics this book is a must read for anyone with a love of puzzles, a head for figures or who is considering further study of mathematics. On the Study and Difficulties of Mathematics is a book written by accomplished mathematician Augustus De Morgan. Now republished by Forgotten Books, De Morgan discusses many different branches of the subject in some detail. He doesn't shy away from complexity but is always entertaining. One purpose of De Morgan's book is to serve as a guide for students of mathematics in selecting the most appropriate course of study as well as to identify the most challenging mental concepts a devoted learner will face. "No person commences the study of mathematics without soon discovering that it is of a very different nature from those to which he has been accustomed," states De Morgan in his introduction. The book is divided into chapters, each of which is devoted to a different mathematical concept. From the elementary rules of arithmetic, to the study of algebra, to geometrical reasoning, De Morgan touches on all of the concepts a math learner must master in order to find success in the field. While a brilliant mathematician in his own right, De Morgan's greatest skill may have been as a teacher. On the Study and Difficulties of Mathematics is a well written treatise that is concise in its explanations but broad in its scope while remaining interesting even for the layman. On the Study and Difficulties of Mathematics is an exceptional book. Serious students of mathematics would be wise to read De Morgan's work and will certainly be better mathematicians for it. On the study and difficulties of mathematics: Large Print By Augustus De Morgan One of the twentieth century's most eminent mathematical writers, Augustus De Morgan enriched his expositions with insights from history and psychology. On the Study and Difficulties of Mathematics represents some of his best work, containing points usually overlooked by elementary treatises, and written in a fresh and natural tone that provides a refreshing contrast to the mechanical character of common textbooks. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. Excerpt from Address on the Study of Mathematics N ow, in mathematical reasoning there is none of this doubt. Hence, its superiority as a means of men tal discipline over moral reasoning. We here begin with axioms self-evident to every intellect, and arrive at the most important conclusions, and all along the whole ascent, not a doubt springs up in the mind lest the outset may have been wrong. We rise by a series of equations or ratios, which follow each other necessarily, to the sublime discoveries which occupied the attention of a Descartes or a Newton. We begin by measuring the lot on which we build our cottage and ascend till we seat ourselves among the stars and contemplate the mechanism of the heavens. Excerpt from A Course of Pure Mathematics I have endeavoured to make Chapter IV one of the principal features of the book. The notion of a limit is one that has always presented grave difficulties to mathematical students even of great ability. It has been my good fortune during the last eight or nine years to have a share in the teaching of a good many of the ablest candidates for the Mathematical Tripos; and it is very rarely indeed that I have encountered a pupil who could face the simplest problem involving the ideas of infinity, limit, or continuity, with a vestige of the confidence with which he would deal with questions of a different character and of far greater intrinsic difficulty. I have indeed in an examination asked a dozen candidates, including several future Senior Wranglers, to sum the series 1 +m+m2+ and not received a single answer that was not practically worthless - and this from men quite capable of solving difficult problems connected with the curvature and torsion of twisted curves. I cannot believe that this is due solely to the nature of the subject. There are difficulties in these ideas, no doubt: but they are not so great as many other difficulties inherent in mathematics that every young mathematician completely overcomes. The fault is not that of the subject or of the student, but of the text-book and the teacher. It is not enough for the latter, if he wishes to drive sound ideas on these points well into the mind of his pupils. Excerpt from A Study of Mathematical Education Including the Teaching of Arithmetic This study is based upon twenty years' experience Of school and college education ranging through all grades, including the very elements of counting and form in the kindergarten, the mathematics appropriate to the school, and the standard required Of students for an Honours Degree in our universities. Conclusions based on class-teaching and those arrived at by experiment and by a private study Of the individual have served both to correct and to supplement each other. The substance of the present volume has also formed the introductory part Of a course of lectures on the teaching of mathematics, which, for many years, I have given in various institutions to classes of teachers from almost all types and grades Of schools, elementary as well as secondary and tertiary.
