The production of heavy quarks in high-energy experiments offers a rich field to study, both experimentally and theoretically. Due to the additional quark mass, the description of these processes in the framework of perturbative QCD is much more demanding than it is for those involving only massless partons. In the last two decades, a large amount of precision data has been collected by the deep inelastic HERA experiment. In order to make full use of these data, a more precise theoretical description of charm quark production in deep inelastic scattering is needed. This work deals with the first calculation of fixed moments of the NNLO heavy flavor corrections to the proton structure function F2 in the limit of a small charm-quark mass. The correct treatment of these terms will allow not only a more precise analysis of the HERA data, but starting from there also a more precise determination of the parton distribution functions and the strong coupling constant, which is an essential input for LHC physics. The complexity of this calculation requires the application and development of technical and mathematical methods, which are also explained here in detail.

We discuss two topics in the production of heavy quarks in deep-inelastic scattering: the next-to-leading order Monte-Carlo HVQDIS and the next-to-leading logarithmic resummation of soft gluon effects, including estimates of next-to-next-to-leading order corrections therefrom.

In this thesis we present third-order corrections to heavy-quark production in photonexchange deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and we study the resummation of leading and sub-leading contributions to DIS and other QCD hard processes at large values of the Bjorken variable x. We provide approximate next-to next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections for the heavy-quark contribution to the structure function F2 in photon-exchange DIS. This is achieved by extending and combining the available NNLO information from different kinematic limits. In particular, we predict the full logarithmic behaviour of the coefficient functions near the threshold of heavy-quark production applying soft-gluon exponentiation (SGE). We utilize available all order-result in the high-energy limit to derive an analytic NNLO expression for the dominant contributions in this limit. Finally from known even integer Mellin moments of the heavy-quark operator matrix elements, as well as from the already mentioned high-energy behaviour, we construct an approximation for the heavy-quark coefficient functions at asymptotically large values of the exchanged momentum squared Q2. By combining these individual results we construct NNLO coefficient functions for heavy-quark DIS which, while still being approximate, represent the most comprehensive results possible at this point. The resulting improvement of the prediction, as well as the low-Q2 small-x limitations of the present NNLO results, are then illustrated in a phenomenological study. In the second part of this thesis we address the all-order resummation of QCD quantities in the large-x limit for which SGE is not applicable. After reviewing the resummation method that will be employed and the already available results for inclusive DIS (for which we will provide a closed analytic formula at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy for the first time), we apply this method to electronpositron semi-inclusive annihilation (SIA). Also in this case, closed analytic formulae for the resummed time-like splitting and coefficient functions at NNLL accuracy are presented. This resummation method is then applied to the off-diagonal partonic cross sections in Drell-Yan lepton pair production and in Higgs hadro-production, for which we are able to resum only the leading logarithmic (LL) contributions.

The proceedings of DIS 2001 present the most updated status of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) physics. Topics like structure function measurements and phenomenology, QCD studies in DIS and photoproduction, spin physics and diffractive interactions are reviewed in detail, with emphasis on those studies that push the test of QCD and the Standard Model to the limits of their present range of validity, towards both the very high and the very low four-momentum transfers in the lepton-proton scattering. Moreover, this workshop coincided with the transition between the first period of experimentation at the HERA ep collider at DESY and the start of the updated HERA II operation — allowing a review of what has been learned up to now and a discussion on the main future directions of research in this field.

It is known that the LHC has a considerable discovery potential because of its large centre-of-mass energy (vs =14 TeV) and the high design luminosity. In addition, the two experiments ATLAS and CMS perform precision measurements for numerous models in physics. The increasing experimental precision demands an even higher level of accuracy on the theoretical side. For a more precise prediction of outcomes, one has to consider the corrections obtained typically from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). The calculation of these corrections in the high energy regime is described by perturbation theory. In the present study, multi-loop calculations in QCD, including in particular two-loop corrections for single top quark production, are considered. There are several phenomenological motivations to study single top quark production: Firstly, the process is sensitive to the electroweak Wtb-vertex; moreover, non-standard couplings can hint at physics beyond the Standard Model. Secondly, the t-channel cross section measurement provides information on the b-quark Parton Distribution Functions (PDF). Finally, single top quark production enables us to directly measure the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa(CKM) matrix element Vtb. The next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) calculation of the single top quark production has many building blocks. In this study, two blocks will be presented: one-loop corrections squared and two-loop corrections interfered with Born. Initially, the one-loop squared contribution at NNLO for single top quark production will be calculated. Before we begin with the calculation of the two-loop corrections to single top quark production, we calculate the QCD form factors of heavy quarks at NNLO, along with the axial vector coupling as a first independent check. A comparison with the relevant literature suggests that this approach is in line with generally accepted procedure. This consistency check provides a proof of the validity of our setup. In the next step, the two-loop corrections to single top quark production will be calculated. After reducing all occurring tensor integrals to scalar integrals, we apply the integration by parts method (IBP) to find the master integrals. This step is a major challenge compared to all similar calculations because of the number of variables in the problem (two Mandelstam variables s and t, the dimension d and the mass of the top quark mt as well as the mass of the W boson mw). Finally, the calculation of the three kinds of topologies – vertex corrections, double boxes and non-planar double boxes – in the two-loop contribution at NNLO calculation will be presented.

This volume contains the Proceedings of the 17th Workshop of the INFN ELOISATRON Project on "QCD at 200 TeV", held at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture, EMCSC, Erice, Trapani, Italy, in the period 11-17 June 1991. The new multi-Te V frontiers of Subnuclear Physics are no more beyond our imagination. A conceptual design of the highest energy (100+100 TeV) proton-proton collider -the ELOISA TRON -already exists. Intensive R & D studies are on the go to develop the most promising and innovative detector technologies for the highest energy and luminosity. QCD (Quantum Chromo-Dynamics) will be the theory to describe the expected Physics scenario of future S upercolliders. The purpose of the Workshop was therefore to review the recent status of QCD in High Energy interactions and to discuss the novel aspects of Perturbative and Non Perturbative QCD with special emphasis on future experimental studies at Super-High Energy Colliders, up to the 200 Te V limit. The topics were: - Classical QCD: particle multiplication, multiplicities and spectra, jet profiles, coherence effects, etc. - Hadron interaction cross-sections and structure functions at Super-High Energies, small-x behaviour, QCD Pomeron, "hot spots"--QCD fragmentation models, present and future. - Artificial neural networks in High Energy Physics. - New theoretical aspects of QCD at Super-High Energies (instanton-induced large cross sections, baryon number violation and peculiar multi-quark production events, etc.)

About three decades after the first experiments on deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering began to investigate the structure of hadrons, the history of this fruitful field of particle physics continues in the broad spectrum of research performed at the electron and positron proton collider HERA at DESY, where the multipurpose detectors ZEUS and H1 access ep scattering at a center of mass energy of 300 GeV and explore as yet uncharted kinematic realms of deep inelastic scattering. After the first years of data taking at HERA, each of the experiments has collected a total of roughly 40 pb 1 of e+p data, yielding sensitivity to deep inelastic e+p interactions at high four momentum transfers, Q2, where typi cal cross sections drop into the subpicobarn regime. This kinematic domain is characterized by electroweak unification, manifesting itself most markedly in the neutral and charged current cross sections, which approach an equal order of magnitude as Q2 rises above the square of the W and Z masses. Consequently, HERA allows, for the first time, studies of both types of pro cesses simultaneously with the same initial state conditions and in the same detector, and thus we can investigate the interplay of electroweak and strong forces governing the respective cross sections.
