The nature of sensation, the time relations of mental phenomena, memory, association, space and time concepts have been carefully studied by many eminent scientists. But the whole field of the emotions has been practically a mare clausum for psychologists. Several attempts to study and determine the nature of the simplest aesthetic forms have been reported; theories of pleasure and pain, supported by some experimental observations, have been advanced, but no serious attempt has been made to submit the emotions to experimental investigation. Every psychologist recognizes the necessity of doing so and that it is the most important field of mental phenomena, and that, until psychologists can reduce the motions to some semblance of order or more ultimate principles, experimental psychology can be said to cover only a part of the field of mental life.
