The Omega-Theory: A New Physics of Earthquakes, Second Edition offers a unifying, mathematical framework to describe and answer the most pressing and unexamined dilemmas of earthquake sequences. Those in the fields of seismology and geology are currently faced with a vast and complex mathematical structure, involving many new, natural laws and theorems. This book interprets this structure as a new physical theory and paradigm, helping users understand the tectonic and seismic processes within the Earth. As such, it is an essential resource for future researchers in the fields of structural geology, physics of the Earth, and seismology. In the last decades, generations of seismologists, geophysicists, and geologists have accumulated enough knowledge and information to allow for the reformulation and solution of this essential problem. Hence, this book provides a great resource for researchers and professionals. Brings together twenty years of research in the field of geophysics and attacks the problem within the framework of the Cosserat continuum theory Heavily tested on tens of natural examples and numerical tests Includes 350 color figures and graphs Spans across many fields of theoretical physics and geology, such as plate tectonics, synchronization of chaotic systems, solitons and fractals, mathematical set theory, and quantum mechanics

He asked, frustrated that she wasn't uttering a single word. "I-I'm sorry, A-Alpha..." Evelyn didn't even know what she was sorry about but she just wanted her mate to calm down. On November 6 and 7, 1987, lipid and lipoprotein researchers from all over Europe convened in Munich on the occasion of the second European Workshop on Lipid Metabolism (EWLM). This informal gathering was devoted to two main topics, and recent research results were presented and discussed during a poster session. Recent developments in the physiology and pathophysiology of lipoprotein sub fractions were discussed on the first day of the meeting. In recent years, new analytical tools have been created for analyzing lipoprotein subfractions, particularly the apolipoprotein component. With the, introduction of immunological and elec trophoretic methods it has become clear that the heterogeneity of the plasma lipopro tein system is even greater than had been assumed only a decade or so ago. Despite this, it is apparent from the contributions to this volume that new methods for differentiating lipoprotein subfractions will increase our understanding of lipoprotein metabolism, especially of the triglyceride-rich lipoprotein particles and the high density lipoproteins. The complex functions of the various plasma apolipoproteins and their association with the lipoprotein lipid in single or complex lipoprotein particles give rise to a complex and dynamic metabolic system that changes constantly during the day. While it has for some time been possible to delineate fairly accurately the atherogenic potential of low-density lipoproteins, which are comparatively simple lipoprotein particles, the new methods of lipoprotein subfraction analysis will be needed to select and differentiate amongst the potentially atherogenic triglyceride rich particles, especially the chylomicron and very low density lipoprotein remnants.

Dietary Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Cancer provides all the latest information on the possible benefits of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) against a wide series of cancers. Several influential scientists in this field have contributed to make this book unique amongst the others published so far in this field. The chapters give detailed information about the results obtained in this field through experimental studies conducted on both animals and cultured cells, as well as through human intervention trials and epidemiological observational studies. This book represents an important tool for researchers working in nutrition and oncology, since it collects all the knowledge about omega-3 PUFAs and cancer, even the most recent, in a single publication. For the first time controversies among the different studies are also covered with great detail in this book. The book enables physicians to clearly understand on a scientific basis if their oncologic patients or patients at risk of cancer could actually benefit from a diet enriched in omega-3 PUFAs or from a dietary supplementation with these fatty acids. The book represents also a good resource for ordinary individuals as well as cancer patients to learn more about omega-3 PUFAs and understand how these dietary components may affect cancer growth.

Research on omega-3 fatty acids has come a long way since its beginnings in the middle 70's. Starting with studies on the role of omega-3 fatty acids in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, interest soon turned to the mechanisms of and the need to balance the omega-6 to the omega-3 ratio for homeostasis and normal development. Today, it is widely accepted that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid are essential for brain development during pregnancy, lactation and throughout the life cycle. It is also no longer controversial that DHA can affect brain function, mental health and behavior, and studies on supplemental DHA in age-related macular degeneration have revealed significant Interactions between DHA and genetic variants. Featuring contributions by leading scientists in the field, this publication discusses not only the role of omega-3 fatty acids in maintaining homeostasis, but also their importance in the prevention and management of neurodegenerative diseases associated with the aging process or genetic predisposition. It is thus not only of interest to nutritionists, dieticians or policy makers, but also to psychologists, physiologists, neuroscientists, psychiatrists, ophthalmologists, geneticists, neurologists, pedlatrlclans, obstetricians and geriatricians.

This E-book covers the main aspects about the benefits of omega-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) to human health. The knowledge of physiological effects of LC-PUFAs at different levels is constantly expanding. Topics covered over 10 chapters thoroughly detail the role of omega-3 LCPUFAs in nutrition (gene regulation) and disease (clinical applications); information about food sources and recent intake recommendations is also explained. This book also discusses current data concerning the role of LC-PUFAs during pregnancy and lactation, in cognitive function, immune response.
