The Oma are a gentle, intelligent clan of the early Pleistocene era who have discovered a system of manipulating organic material to cut, combine, grow, shrink and mutate plant and animal tissues into whatever form is desired. Flight becomes their most enticing goal. Eventually, they develop a craft large enough they can all live within. The body of this vessel is based on a cicada. They configure it to include a respiration system, food producers, waste treatment, photosynthesis energy gatherers and a propulsion system capable of near light speed in the vacuum of space. Threatened by extinction from a large tribe of mythically obsessed fanatics, the Oma escape into the sky and soon discover the stars naked in the eternal night of space. Their legends tell them that the stars are the souls of their departed loved ones, and they embark on a voyage to see if this is so. They travel for forty years to the center of the Galaxy and back, through globular clusters, open gobs of stars, gaseous nebulae, the giant black hole at the Galaxy's center and even a visit to a young earthlike planet. Recording their voyage on chameleon skins, they retrace their journey back to Earth of the present day, now 114,000 years in their future. Come join them as they discover humanity in the 21st century future.--

The Thomas Ward is like a small stream in the mountains, that emerges from a tiny spring and trickles on down the hillside to join the creek on its way to the river. No attempt has been made to get all the information, about all the people who live, or have lived, within its boundaries. Neither is the material collected, considered to be the most important or free from errors. This book is just "a cup of water" dipped from the little stream, as it journeys on its way, no attempt is made to dip up all the water or stop its flow. It is hoped, that like the cup of cool water from the tiny stream, this book will refresh the reader, and the stream of time flows on. To those pioneers, both young and old who had the courage to combine all the natural resources which the creator so wisely stored in these mountains, rivers and valleys along with the brawn and brain that He gave man. The Miracle of the Desert came to be.

As part of his doctoral research, Albert Schatz, a twenty-three-year-old graduate student at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, diligently worked alone in a basement laboratory to find an antibiotic to treat tuberculosis. In October of 1943, Schatz discovered streptomycin. But his professor, Selman Waksman, took the credit, relegating Schatz to the footnotes of history. Over fifty years later, German-born Inge Auerbacher read an article that named Schatz as co-discoverer of the drug. As a young Jewish girl during World War II, Auerbacher was a prisoner at Terezin concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. She was diagnosed with tuberculosis during her imprisonment and was able to receive the life-saving streptomycin after her immigration to America. Auerbacher contacted Schatz in 1997, compelled to offer him gratitude for the scientific research that saved her life. She learned of the controversy surrounding the discovery of streptomycin and Schatz's ultimate recognition for his work. As a result of their friendship, they decided to co-author this book. Finding Dr. Schatz is their powerful true story-told in their own words-of a scientist who changed the world and a woman who lived because of it.
