Excerpt from Oliver Cromwell: The Story of His Life and Work So far from this great movement, of which Puritanism was merely one manifestation, being the last of a succession of similar heroisms, it had practically very much less connection with what went before than with all that has guided us in our history since. Of course, it is impossible to draw a line with mathematical exactness between the different stages of history, but it is both pos sible and necessary to draw it with rough effi ciency; and, Speaking roughly, the epoch of the Puritans was the beginning of the great modern epoch of the English-speaking world - infinitely its greatest epoch. We have not wandered far from the ideas that guided the wisest and most earnest leaders in the century that saw Cromwell; on the contrary, these ideas were themselves very far indeed from those which had guided the Eng lish people in previous ages, and the ideas that now guide us represent on the whole what was best and truest in the thought of the Puritans. Excerpt from The Life of Oliver Cromwell Some may think that Carlyle's "Letters and Speeches of Cromwell" render a life of him unnecessary, while, in fact, that work was the only cause of my writing this. A multitude of biographies have been written on Cromwell, but not one based on the general view taken by Carlyle. The letters and speeches of a man can never constitute his biography, though they may give us a correct and complete idea of his character. The letters and speeches of Washington, and his life, are two very different works. In the first place, the narrative is broken up by the introduction of letters and documents on various subjects, that must he placed in chronological order. In the second place, events are mere links, by which these are connected; while in biography, they are the writer's chief concern. In one case, the writings of a man form the burden of a book; in the other, his actions. The compiler of the former cannot condense, while it is the chief business of the historian of the latter to do so. Excerpt from Oliver Cromwell: His Life, Times, Battlefields, and Contemporaries For it may be, perhaps, asserted, that the variety of Opinion with reference to the character of Cromwell is almost as diversified as ever, although the collec tion of his letters and speeches by Thomas Carlyle has done so much to set him forth in a fair and honourable light, for which even those most enthusi astio for the career he represented were scarcely pre pared. And it cannot be doubted that the estimate of his character will always be formed, not merely from sympathy with a certain set of opinions, but even more from that strange, occult, and undefinable senti' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Follow the Gleam: A Tale of the Time of Oliver Cromwell This story is the third of the series of Historical Romances which I have planned to write, and is in many respects a natural sequence to the two which have preceded it. The first, Lest We Forget, was a story of the time when Queen Mary, Cardinal Pole, and Stephen Gardiner cast such dark shadows over our land; the second, A Flame of Fire, dealt with the period of the Spanish Armada; while Follow the Gleam deals with the stirring times of the great Civil War. In this last story my reading of history has led me to adopt an attitude which I believe is not generally taken by novelists who have sought to depict the great.
