This book is an intimate memoir of a very vivid set of experiences in the author’s life. Fascinated by a distant event, she becomes so drawn into it; she loses her mind, in the eyes of the world. Yet to her, it is a profoundly enlightening and moving experience, which instead of fading, only grows. Life imitates art, which imitates life and back again. What really is the nature of our consciousness, and what are its possibilities? Do we have any idea?

While historical and political aspects of the Russo-German relationship over the past three to four centuries have received due attention from scholars, the range of the far more diverse, important, and peculiar cultural relations still awaits full assessment. This volume shows how enriching these cultural influences were for both countries, affecting many spheres of intellectual and daily life such as philosophy and religion, education and ideology, sciences and their application, arts and letters, custom and language. The German-Russian relationship has always been particularly intense. Oscillating as it has between infatuation and contempt, it has always been marked by a singular paradox: a German cultural presence in Russia resulting either in a more or less complete fusion, as in the case of Russifield German, or in a pronounced mutual repulsion, accompanied by the denigration of each other's culture as inferior. It is this curious paradox that determines the perspectives of the articles that were specially written for this volume, providing it with a unifying focus.

From the subversive to the antic, the uproarious to the disturbing, the stories of Bruce Sterling are restless, energy-filled journeys through a world running on empty--the visionary work of one of our most imaginative and insightful modern writers. They live as strangers in strange lands. In worlds that have fallen--or should have. They wage battles in wars already lost and become heroes--and sometimes martyrs--in their last-ditch efforts to preserve the dignity and individuality of humanity. A hack Indian filmmaker takes the pulse of a wounded and declining civilization--21st-century Britain. A pair of swashbuckling Silicon Valley entrepreneurs join forces to make a commercial killing--in organic underground slime and computer-generated jellyfish. A man in a Japanese city takes orders from a talking cat while pursuing a drama of danger and adventure that has become the very essence of his life. From "The Littlest Jackal", a darkly hilarious thriller of mercs and gunrunners set in Finland, to a stark vision of a post-atomic netherworld in his haunting tale "Taklamakan", Bruce Sterling once again breaks boundaries, breaks icons, and breaks rules to unleash the most dangerously provocative and intelligent science fiction being written today.

A deadly auction is about to take place as two scientists put their prototype for harnessing cold fusion on the market. Scheduled to be sold to the highest bidder in a secret Syrian location, the knowledge of how to harness cold fusion would give great and dangerous nuclear power to its owner. As Mack Bolan races to intercept the exchange, he discovers he’s not the only one intent on crashing the bidding party. A group of Russians have hijacked the proceedings and disappeared with the scientists. The Russians expect an even higher price for the brains behind the scientific breakthrough, and Bolan must track the ex-KGB kidnappers across the desert from Syria to Libya and stop them from trading their human merchandise. Access to technology is low, so the Executioner will have to resort to WWII desert warfare strategies to put these Russians out of business—permanently.
